Breaking: Lea Michele, Cory Monteith And Chris Colfer Not Returning For Glee Season 4

Okay, there are probably those Gleeks out there about to take to Twitter and make their complaints be known in 140 characters or less. Probably with lots of capitalized letters and exclamation points. But let’s be honest – eventually the stars would have to graduate high school, right?

And that’s exactly what’s going to happen to Rachel, Finn and Kurt. They will graduate from McKinley High and be gone from the show. Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer — are “not going to be back at all for Season 4,” said executive producer Ryan Murphy to The Hollywood Reporter.

“You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic,” he added, “or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year.

“We’ve never done anything by the book,” Murphy continued. “We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea. They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top.”

So what does this mean for Gleeks? Well, closure for starters. The series, which has had storylines just dangle with no resolutions, will at least face reality and have its characters graduate and not stick around. Though it may not be the end of Rachel and Kurt in prime-time just yet. Ryan Murphy has hinted that a spin-off type series could come about that features Rachel and Kurt heading to NYC to see if they can succeed in musical theater and one day end up on Broadway.
