Over at MSN, Universal has unleashed the first theatrical trailer to its upcoming release of The Thing. Originally set to be released this April, the studio had pushed the release to October 14th so that reshoots could be done to enhance the film’s feeling of dread and to nail down some exposition.

The stars for this prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic include Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Ulrich Thomsen. It has some good atmosphere overall, but will Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. be able to touch Carpenter’s original?

The film takes place at another Antarctica research site that has an extra-terrestrial presence. The discovery of a being encased in ice for hundreds of thousands of years leads paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Winstead) to travel to Antarctica and investigate. When the discovery leads to a killer alien host among the inhabitants of the expedition, it’s up to her and helicopter pilot Sam Carter (Edgerton) to hunt down and kill the alien. Hope they have extra dynamite.
