BOX OFFICE: Harry Potter Shatters Domestic Record For Midnight Opening

News

Prepare to see some box office records broken this weekend. The final installment in the Harry Potter franchise has arrived and already it’s started to make some noise in a big, big way. Multiple reports have Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 grossing a staggering $43.5 million from midnight openings on 3,800 screens. The film, which opens wide on 4,375 screens, is not the largest theatrical roll out for a Harry Potter film. That honor goes to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It opened on 4,455 screens.

The Deathly Hallows Part 2 opened in theaters on Wednesday in 43 foreign countries and raked in $43.6 million. On Thursday the film earned another $37.6 million to bring its two-day total to $82.5 million.

Take those figures combined with North America’s record-breaking midnight opening and the film has earned $126 million worldwide. And the release should continue to steamroll the competition and break even more records this coming weekend.

Overseas, 3D screenings have accounted for approximately 61 percent of its total gross. In the United States, all 3D midnight showings were sold out.
