Graphic Novel and Digital Sales Up, Monthly Issue Sales Down.

News

From The Beat:

According to ICv2 president Milton Griepp at their panel on Comics, Media, and Digital, Graphic Novel sales are up 3% in the first half of 2011 (more so in bookstores than specialty retailors) and single-issue comic sales are down 8%.

Most importantly, digital sales seem to have doubled and are somewhere between 6 & 18 million dollars.

Jay’s commentary: *ahem* Funny all that info should appear after my column yesterday, advocating a shift from traditional monthly publishing in favor of a digital release and a print collection. The FreakAngels method. Hell, the method every single webcomic uses to make themselves sustainable.

And look at those digital sales – that is millions in profit. Cold hard profit. No shipping fees, no printings costs, no returned books or misprints that must be destroyed.

Does it even make sense to print single issue comics anymore?
