Hold your Horses, it’s just the Beginning

Once again, the endcap of our two hour Monday night show was what shined through an already substantial viewing. Despite all the excitement behind Philip’s return (especially with such a defining ‘new’ theme song), what’s all this I hear about triggers being pulled a bit too early?

I know the comparison has been made far too often, but last year’s Nexus angle had the opposite complaint. It dragged until it became stale, while Creative hit the panic switch and had Cena bury it. Look, I believe it just skepticism, and believe me, history justifies the skepticism many of us hold towards E’s potentially great angles. Thing is, something changed recently. There has been a shift in relevance, and all of a sudden, there is an actual acknowledgment of a particular audience that hand’t really been catered to: the IWC.

Or at least the fan whose characteristics are similar to the IWC’s. There’s been a great deal of evidence towards this. Punk’s emergence and, basically, organic face turn. D-Bry holding the briefcase of dreams. The slowly, but surely push of Zack Ryder. It’s because of this that I don’t see this angle with Punk/Cena as the defining moment of this new era, but more of a beginning.

Punk has opened the door, scratch that, kicked the damn thing off of its hinges, for this potential new era to come into play. Now, we’ve got Vince being “let go”, Trips as the new authority, and the word “ass” is being used freely once again.

I’m not saying this will definitely lead to something revolutionary. I’m simply saying that booking Punk/Cena for Summerfest shouldn’t necessarily be seen as a rush to the highest high for ‘E, but rather a gateway drug.

So, please. Moderate your cynicism.

A Dose of Painkilla

Oh Radio, tell me why John Cena can’t do a decent suplex!

Only a few thoughts this time on this week’s Raw.

First, welcome back John Morrison! I know that a lot of you guys aren’t too into Morrison for many different reasons, but I personally love his move set and he’s put on some kick-ass matches in his career. So, I’m looking forward to seeing a new championship level Morrison. Just in time for Summerslam in LA.

Second, John Cena has been World Champion 11 times (correct me if I’m wrong), Flair was a 16 time champion, Triple H has been a 13 time champion, Undertaker is an 8 time world champion… (to quote one of my favorite “Firefly” characters) does that seem right to you? Yes, Cena works really really hard, Yes, he cuts good promos. But when you look at the wrestling ability of the other three, does it make any sense that Cena is so far up the ladder? He’s sloppy. Seriously, watch this cock face throw a fisherman’s suplex and then watch video of Regal, Henning, or Lance Storm doing a fisherman’s suplex, or even footage of a good power slam. What’s the fucking deal?

Third, R Truth is a great competitor and he cuts killer promos. However, making him look like he’s absolutely nuts is completely unnecessary. It doesn’t add anything to his character. It actually takes a lot of his credibility away.

Lastly, WHAT THE FUCK!? Was I the only one who thought that the WWE would take this opportunity to either change the title back to the old title or at least make it better!? Why are they still using that crap belt!?

Welcome back, Punk. You’ll always be champ to me.

PS. Great to see Ryder on Raw.

Blue Streak

It’s refreshing to see Orton’s character go back to a pissed off loose cannon. This is where he shines (better as a heel, but we’ll take what we can get). An angry viper fighting his way towards the championship is a much easier face to cheer for than smiling baby oil guy. Am I right?

Anybody else get “fake ECW” nostalgia with Zeke/Christian? Lovely.

Rhodes is getting his own video package. Nice to see, but I doubt he’s really got a need for it.

It’s interesting to note that Kane is in a storyline where he may be finding and accepting his humanity. Makes it seem as if the character is in his last hoorah. See No Evil 2, anyone?

Seeing Red

The Miz/Mysterio match was executed flawlessly. I don’t think I’ve been this entertained with a match on Raw in awhile.

It’s also interesting to note that the Miz, who was the one person who benefited the most from this past year’s transitional phase, is the one most against the new regime Trips is bringing in. Even more era defining proof.

I hope the new theme and this stress on “perfection” means something substantial for Ziggles. He’s earned it.

Jim Ross, you have been missed.

As I said before, Punk/Cena is the door buster. The feud to watch? Morrison/Truth. Contrary to what his face run has told us, anyone who’s seen his heel persona on “fake ECW” knows the promo potential he has. And he has apparently been to a few acting and improv classes during his time off. I have a hunch that the missing component has been found.

Great to see Zack is back, and with a victory, no less. Let’s forget that it was over Cole, shall we?

Mysterio finally has “WWE Title Holder” as a notch to his belt. And they were able to further the Cena/Punk storyline without a hitch. If anyone still has a gripe about titles switching hands too many times during this transaction, it’s nitpicking at this point.

Welcome back, Phillip.

A comparison of the last time Trips was in power and the future? Of course, courtesy of CB’s World.

Probably one of the most interesting perspectives pieces I’ve come to read, Matt Harrak takes you through the time he was a production assistant for Vince in Creatively Endeavored.

And, of course, Mr. Glazer brings his thesis on the current state of things post-Raw on Tuesday Morning Backlash.

Klosing Thoughts

I do apologize for the shortness of the Korner these past few weeks. I’ve been involved in several projects as of late (a short film here, a soundtrack there). One major project has finally been completed: a short film by the name of “White Rice”. Once it becomes available online, I’ll post the link for it. Until nest week, my friends….

Adieu.

I like my wrestling almost as much as I do my coffee. And I do love my coffee, as you can tell how much it's affected my skin tone.
