Kevin Smith’s To Hit Somebody In Two Parts

News, Projects

During the Q&A portion of tonight’s Montreal stop of the Red Provinces Tour, Kevin Smith‘s Canadian series of screenings for Red State, Kevin Smith let loose a big item of news about the direction of his last film. Hit Somebody will be a two parter. Film School Rejects caught up with him and he confirmed it to them.

“It’ll be one flick cleft in twain. Looking like part one ends at the close of Buddy’s first pro game, 1972-ish. Flick starts in 1954. Part 2 ends in 1980.”

The film, based on the Warren Zevon song below, will be Smith’s last as a director.

What does this mean? Smith is certainly ambitious for a final film, going the Kill Bill route for Hit Somebody at least in the planning stage. But here’s the thing: can he actually pull it off. The song is less than five minutes long and one imagines there can’t be that much story you can wind out of it. Smith might be biting off more than he can chew with the requisite five hours of material; Kill Bill would’ve been a better film without the excessive length.
