Everybody’s Doing It: Alcon Entertainment To Remake Point Break

News, Projects

Okay, so there’s been talk about a remake/reboot/sequel to Top Gun. But did we expect that somebody would want to remake Point Break? Next to Con Air it’s one of those perfect, outrageously staged action movies, but unlike Con Air it’s a better film overall because of its hippy, surfer philosophy when it comes to robbing banks.

Frankly, everything is up to for grabs to be remade. If Sony Pictures can reboot Spider-Man just so it can retain the rights, might as well remake Kathryn Bigelow’s actioneer starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

Alcon Entertainment, the company behind that new Blade Runner film that Ridley Scott has signed on to direct, is behind this new remake, reports Deadline.

Kurt Wimmer, whose trajectory as a screenwriter includes everything from Ultraviolet (godawful) to Equillibrium (entertaining) with the recent Salt somewhere in between. Considering that he has the Total Recall remake forthcoming what’s another?

If you recall Kathryn Bigelow’s original, you remember that Keanu Reeves played Johnny Utah, a quarterba…um…I mean FBI agent going undercover to infiltrate a gang of surfers who double as bank-robbers known as the “ex-Presidents” because of the masks they wear. The gang is led by the charismatic hipster Bodhi (Swayze).

Regarding the new production, producer Michael De Luca offers, “Point Break’ wasn’t just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fueled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same for the young 21st!”

Knowing that Point Break got a new following for those that saw Edgar Wright’s British comedy Hot Fuzz and knowing how wishy-washy Kurt Wimmer is as a screenwriter, I’m leaning to the notion that we won’t see anything inspired come about.
