Star Power: Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz Results

The talk coming out of Star Power was the controvesial ending to Floyd Mayweather’s bid to reclaim his old WBC Welterweight Title from new champion Victor Ortiz. After three rounds of effortless superiority Mayweather stepped on the gass in the fourth round, putting together unusually aggressive and impactful combinations as he opened up in an attempt to knockout the overmatched champion. Ortiz responded by trying to make the fight ugly, pushing Mayweather up against the ropes and deliberately headbutting ‘The Professor’. The clear foul necessitated a break in the action with referee Joe Cortez deducting a point from Ortiz. However a botched restart from Cortez saw the referee call for action but turn his back to the fighters while talking to the timekeeper. He therefore missed Mayweather responding to a third attempt by Ortiz to apologize by hugging him with a right hand/left hook combination that first stunned then floored the champion. Ortiz could not get back to his feet and so gave Mayweather his first finish since he came back from retirement.

Elsewhere on the card, Erik Morales became the first four-weight world champion from Mexico after stopping Pablo Cesar Cano in the tenth while Saul Alavrez knocked out Alfonso Gomez in the sixth. However all the talk was about Floyd Mayweather, particularly after he had a heated confrontation with veteran commentator Larry Merchant.
