Universal Prepping New Version of Scarface

News, Projects, Rumors

In one of the more interesting stories of the week, Universal is beginining preparations on a third take of the classic tale Scarface. This per Deadline Hollywood.

No actors/writers/directors have been attached to this as of yet, as it’s still in the development stages. Apparently a different take on the story of the rise and fall of a gangster is on the horizon as the film won’t be a remake of the original, a Prohibition era film, or the Al Pacino cocaine-fueled Cuban immigrant tale of Brian de Palma.

What does this mean? On the surface it would be easy to do the usual “Oh no they’re remaking a classic” but Scarface was already a remake of a film so to tackle the source material again isn’t as big a deal as it could be. Will Smith’s I Am Legend was the third take on the same novel and it’ll be interesting to see where this tale goes. Both versions of Scarface were markedly different and one imagines this would be as well; one would be curious at the take they’d take with today’s modern world.

What do you think? Is this is a good idea? Or do you think they should leave it at two versions of the film? Let us know below.
