Dumb & Dumber was the comedy that put Peter and Bobby Farrelly on the map, and pretty much gave Jim Carrey the freedom to do whatever project he wanted and got $20 million to go along with it. Seventeen years later and the Farrellys are just now getting to realize their dream project (The Three Stooges) and Carrey is picking up paychecks and playing with penguins (Mr. Popper’s Penguins).
And what was Jeff Daniels doing in between then and now? He’s been working pretty steadily, appearing in such films as Pleasantville, Good Night, and Good Luck, The Lookout, and most recently Howl.
Now there’s news that the Farrellys want to make a sequel to their 1994 hit.
Sean Anders and John Morris have been hired to write the script. Some may remember the comedy the co-wrote together, Sex Drive, which Andres also directed. They also co-wrote She’s Out of My League and assisted with Hot Tub Time Machine and Carrey’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins.
As sequel heavy as Hollywood is these days, no one could excuse a sequel to Dumb & Dumber. After all, the original was made for $16 million and went on to gross $250 million worldwide, and became a hot title when it hit the video market. Then New Line Cinema gave us the prequel that nobody wanted with Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. It will be interesting to see if the proposed sequel sticks with PG-13 or goes R due to the recent success of films like The Hangover and Bridesmaids.
