On Wednesday, Warner Bros. went fishing with Oscar bait as it looked to build word of mouth for Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar. The studio released the film in select cities two days before its 1,900-screen roll out on Friday.
In terms of theater averages, the Wednesday bow averaged $7,571 per screen. Comparitively, Eastwood’s last film, Hereafter, debuted in six theaters on a Friday and grossed $60,701. Clearly, it was to that film’s advantage opening on a Friday as opposed to midweek.
Be on the lookout for more coverage of J. Edgar this coming weekend with multiple reviews of the potential Best Picture nominee.
