Blu-ray Review: “Weird Al” Yankovic Live! The Alpocalypse Tour

Blu-ray Reviews, Reviews

“Weird Al” Yankovic is back with his latest tour for his latest album, Alpocalypse, and if you don’t have the money, time or inclination to go out and see him live but want to, then this concert video release is something you should check out.

Al opens the show with a solid selection of his newer songs, the highlights being “Polka Face,” “TMZ,” and “Party in the CIA.” After that he does a big medley of classics including “Money For Nothing,” “I Want a New Duck,” and “Eat It.” And he encores with a double whammy of Star Wars goodness with “The Saga Begins” and “Yoda.” And in-between you get a really sweet drum solo!

As one may have heard, or come to expect from a Weird Al concert, he changes costumes just about every song. I’m not sure how much time that takes, but they cut all that stuff out and edit the songs together seamlessly.

Weird Al has pretty fantastic stage presence that pops right off your TV into your living room. There really isn’t much else to tell, however I will leave you with one question: How does he fit all those curly locks under that tiny Kurt Cobain wig?

This film is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital Stereo. This is a fantastic looking concert film and the HD quality really makes you feel like you could be there in person. It sounds great as well, definitely no complaints here.

Special features include: Music Videos (9 min.) for “Perform This Way” and “Polka Face!” which are both fun, the latter is pretty creative. Extra Live Performances (14 min.) of Frank’s 2000-inch TV, You Don’t Love Me Anymore and You Make Me, I can see why the extra live songs would be cut from a TV airing of the concert, but why not just shuffle them back into the concert for the DVD? A bunch of Al’s Personal YouTube videos (4 min.). These are all short and either funny or bizarre or both. Then there is a section called Other Junk (11 min.) which include a college humor video about the Titanic, a bit about his personal hairdresser, One on One wherein Weird Al plays a crazy fan and interviews himself and Haiku Interview on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Haiku Interview is the best part of this section, the others are funny too however.

This is a pretty great concert video, both rocking and hilarious. It’s certainly a must own for every Weird Al fan and sometime fans will absolutely get a kick out of it as well.
