Box Office

This week, Fox Searchlight opened Alexander Payne’s The Descendants in five theaters in Los Angeles and New York on Wednesday to begin its word-of-mouth response for its wider Thanksgiving bow.

The awards hopeful and George Clooney-starring comedy-drama had a per location average of $7,955. That average is slightly ahead of Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, which had a small bow last Wednesday.

Beginning Friday, The Descendants expands into an additional 29 theaters in 11 more markets. On Nov. 23, the comedy-drama will be playing in at least 400 more theaters across the country.

Based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, the film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Shailene Woodley, and Robert Forester.
