Fox’s We Bought a Zoo Heading To Select Theaters This Thanksgiving

News

Shopping malls won’t be the only zoo in the coming weeks. Fox to play Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo on Nov. 26.

National sneak previews don’t occur regularly but they do serve a purpose. Often it is to build word of mouth. Lionsgate tried it with Warrior, but despite positive response the film would go on to have a small box office gross. Typically, the national previews drop on a weekend date prior to the film’s national release.

But 20th Century Fox must see something special in Cameron Crowe’s We Bought a Zoo to want to have it be nationally sneaked four weeks prior to its Christmas-timed release of Dec. 23.  The sneak will occur on Saturday, Nov. 26, which is one of the busiest shopping days and moviegoing times of the year. The sneak preview will be up against new releases The Muppets, Arthur Christmas, and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo.

In a statement, Oren Aviv and Tony Sella, the studio’s marketing heads, said:  “Once in a while, we’re lucky enough to have a picture to which audiences of all kinds and all ages respond so strongly, that it demands a big and unexpected event.  We Bought A Zoo is that kind of picture – and Thanksgiving is a great time to share it via this special very early preview.”

As of now the plan is to have the film play in more than 800 cities across the country.

We Bought A Zoo stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, and Thomas Haden Church, and was co-written by Crowe with Aline Brosh McKenna, and produced with Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn.
