David Ortiz Free Agent Update: Ortiz Will Stay In American League, But Where?

News

David Ortiz turned 36 a few days ago (November 18) and is only a free agent for the second time in his career.

Last season, he batted .309 with 162 hits, 70 extra-base hits, 40 doubles, a .398 on-base percentage, .554 slugging percentage and .953 OPS, all his best marks since 2007. Ortiz also recorded his eighth season with at least 25 home runs.

As for where he will go, the odds remain that he will stay with the Boston Red Sox.
After initially saying that he wanted to leave Beantown, “There’s too much drama. I have been thinking about a lot of things. I don’t know if I want to be part of this drama for next year” he has changed his tune.

“Of course I would like to come back.” New GM Ben Cherington has gone on record and said that he hopes to re-sign Ortiz. Other AL suitors include the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays.

Baltimore’s GM Dan Duquette met with Fern Cuza, Ortiz’s agent, but admitted in a radio interview that he wasn’t sure and said Ortiz would be “a luxury item.” Blue Jays GM said that he was “doing his due diligence” to sign the power hitter but at this point, the Red Sox resigning Ortiz remains the most likely scenario.
