Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will have surgery on his vocal cords Friday. The procedure is not expected to affect him starting the season on time.

Rivera will have polyps on his vocal chords removed at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital and won’t be able to speak for a week. He should be fully recovered by the end of the month.
