2012 Golden Globe Awards Nominations

News, Top Story

Today, actors Sofia Vergara, Woody Harrelson and Gerard Butler announced the nominations in 25 categories for movies and television for the 69th annual Golden Globes. The awards will be televised by NBC live on January 15 at a star-studded ceremony hosted again by comedian Ricky Gervais.

The Weinstein Company’s The Artist leads all film nominees with six nominations, among them best comedy or musical, and acting honors for its French stars, Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Tied for second-place with five nominations The Help and The Descendants. Both films are up for best drama, while The Descendants‘ George Clooney was nominated for best dramatic actor and The Help earned acting slots for Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain.

Also in contention for best drama: Martin Scorsese’s Hugo; The Ides of March; Moneyball; and Steven Spielberg’s World War I epic War Horse.

Joining The Artist in the best musical or comedy category are: 50/50; box-office hit Bridesmaids; Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris; and My Week With Marilyn.

In the television arena, cable network HBO dominated once again scoring 18 nominations. Showtime followed in second with 8.

Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey and HBO’s Mildred Pierce lead the TV field with four nominations a piece, followed by the dramas Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire, both of which received three noms.

In the comedy or musical category, Fox’s New Girl and Glee are up against ABC’s Modern Family as well as Laura Dern’s Enlightened and Matt Le Blanc’s Episodes.

Five-time Academy Award and Globe nominee Morgan Freeman — who won the supporting-actor Oscar for Million Dollar Baby and a best-actor Globe for Driving Miss Daisy — will receive the group’s Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement at the Jan. 15 ceremony.
