The Artist Leads BAFTA Film Award Nominations; Harry Potter Knocked Out Of Best Picture Race
by Travis Leamons on January 17, 2012

The BAFTA has announced its 2012 nominations for its upcoming British Academy Film Awards, Britain’s version of The Oscars. If the nominations are an indication of what’s in store for Oscar nominations, we’ll have many surprises for which to discuss. One film that won’t be among the fray vying for Best Picture at the BAFAs is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. Featuring the Harlem Globetrotters equivalent of British thesps, Alan Rickman, unfortunately, was shut out of the Supporting Actor race. Other layup nominations include Meryl Streep, who recently was awarded a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, and Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Melissa McCarthy, overlooked by the Hollywood Foreign Press for her performance in Bridesmaids, is rewarded here with a supporting actress nomination for her performance. The box-office hit comedy also got a nod for original screenplay. Then you have Drive, a film that was a favorite among the Inside Pulse Movies staff in 2011. Also getting ignored by the Hollywood Foreign Press (minus Albert Brooks’ nomination), it has picked up four nominations for Best Film, Director, Supporting Actress and Editing.
