Earth 2 #2 started on an extreme high for Alan Scott (see spoiler here), that world’s soon-to-be Green Lantern who also happens to be gay. Despite the extreme right and extreme left of non-comic book reading descending on this title like vultures, the issue treated the gay partnership of Alan Scott in a matter-of-fact way. James Robinson opted for a realistic and not sensational portrayal of that couple in an issue where Jay Garrick, Earth 2’s Flash, is the focus. This follows on the two teaser pages from the issue that got the intrent a buzz (first page and second page).
However, not all relationships culminate with a fairy tale ending as Alan Scott soon learns. His romantic train ride with his boyfriend ends in tragedy whose fallout we’ll learn about in Earth 2 #3 next month. In that issue it appears Alan Scott will become Earth 2’s Green Lantern. Will he be an optimistic hero or will he be mourning?
And, in case you were wondering, yes there are 4 BIG developments in Earth 2 #2 that having nothing to do with a gay Green Lantern. :) Those spoilers are here. Plus, it sure looked like an old Justice Society stalwart was reborn in the New 52 on Earth 2 with a different ethicity, doesn’t it?
