DVD Review: Kathy Griffin: Pants Off and Tired Hooker

DVD Reviews, Reviews

Kathy Griffin’s routines are pop culture time capsules. She’s like TMZ with a sense of timing as she mocks the sad and pathetic reality stars that inflict their lives on the public’s eyeballs. Her quarterly comedy specials on Bravo are like TMZ reports with wit and timing. She is America’s finest pop culture pundit who dares to keep up with all Kardashian shows airing on E!. She is putting her metal health at risk for people. Pants Off and Tired Hooker are two of her recent Bravo comedy specials that perfectly bookend the rise and fall of Kris Humphries.

“Pants Off” originally aired back in September of 2011. When Kathy took the stage in Costa Mesa, Kris Humphries had risen above his status as forgettable NBA player to Mr. Kim Kardashian. Kathy has her suspicions about this wedding being legit. She thinks the guy is “a little special needs.” She doesn’t seem to have too much hope for the love between Kris and Kim since the wedding supposedly brought in over $17 million. While she didn’t make the actual ceremony, Kathy did leave a nice message in their virtual wedding guest book. She reads their wedding day Twitter postings. She rips into the people who think the Kardashians are as close as we have to American royalty. Since this isn’t on Bravo She takes time out of picking apart the wedding to review the world of Casey Anthony, the Housewives of New Jersey and Marcus Bachmann. Michelle Bachmann ought to sign a few of these DVDs on the campaign trail. Kathy gets upset that her love letter from a prisoner starts, “Dear Miss Griffith.” But the convict makes up for it by saying she’s hotter than Paris Hilton. How could that guy have not sweet talked the jury into not guilty like Casey Anthony?

The world had changed by the time “Tired Hooker” aired in December of 2011. The audience in Atlantic City were shocked that Kris Humphries was already ex-Mr. Kim Kardashian. How could this have happened? Kathy has plenty of theories on the Konspiracy. She’s excited to know that she can wrap up the entire marriage in two specials. The show isn’t all about the Kardashians. Kathy guides us through a trip to get waxed. This time the Housewives of Beverly Hills get mocked. Nancy Graces nip slip is explored. Did Casey Anthony set her up? The best part of the routine is giving us insight of the night she tried to get Cher to order a pizza over the phone. Kathy’s Cher impersonation is pitch perfect.

Kathy Griffin: Pants Off and Tired Hooker is a worthy double feature of comedy sets since they balance each other. She is able to give Kim Kardashian’s wedding and marriage a complete overview. She marks the arrival and departure of Kris Humphries from national spotlight. She pokes two sets of housewives on the opposite coasts. Kathy easily becomes the perfect instrument to put pop culture into perspective. Plus she teaches us to not expect Cher to order pizza delivery when you drop by her mansion.

The video is 1.78:1 anamorphic. There’s nothing fancy about the show since it’s Kathy on the stage. But they do light her well so she doesn’t even hint at being as old as Tom Cruise. The audio is Dolby Digital Stereo.

Unaired Bonus Footage (17:10) are five bits clipped from both show. She tells about the time she went to a movie premiere with Cher. Her encounter with Paula Abdul is memorable, but not nearly as colorful as when the Little Chocolatiers spanked her ass.

Kathy Griffin: Pants Off and Tired Hooker covers the entire time you might have wondered about Kris Humpheries. He came out of nowhere and has returned to the nowhere known as the New Jersey Nets (now in Brooklyn). A big plus is the Betty Page-esque DVD cover photo of Kathy sporting bangs.

Shout! Factory presents Kathy Griffin: Pants Off and Tired Hooker. Starring: Kathy Griffin. Running Time: 87 minutes. Released: August 7, 2012. Available at Amazon.com.
