Is BJ Penn among the greatest fighters of all-time? It’s a question that even Penn has been asking of late. After the first round of Saturday night’s fight against phenom Rory MacDonald, one that saw Penn staggered and fading early, he didn’t look like the Penn of old. That’s the problem: even a motivated BJ is an old BJ now. And Rory MacDonald is the future and for any future opponents, he’s a very frightening future indeed.
The second frame saw much of the same as MacDonald ripped into the elder statesmen with jabs, kicks and hooks. MacDonald was even able to to get down and into Penn’s guard, however, he was unable to pass with the limited time he they were in the position.
The third stanza was no different. MacDonald ridiculed and destroyed Penn with jabs and strikes that he had no answer for. After the bout, MacDonald all but begged Carlos Condit for a rematch of their June 2010 bout.
Winner: Rory MacDonald by unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)
