Last Monday night’s main event has sparked quite a bit of conversation here at the Pulse. I for one thought it was a brilliant piece of storytelling as John Cena, the fallen hero, finally overcame one of his personal demons and decisively defeated arch-rival CM Punk. After the stellar year CM Punk had (even with the ups and downs of his heel turn), I’m not the least bit upset that Cena won. After all, it had to happen at some point, and what better place than during the “Road to Redemption” angle? I am, however, mildly annoyed at the prospect of the return to the status quo with Cena’s eventual victory over The Rock in what is so clearly a foregone conclusion. For the sake of the story, it has to happen, but that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it.
With Rock vs Cena II and Triple H vs Brock Lesnar II set in stone, as well as Alberto del Rio’s title match against Jack Swagger on the horizon, the next match that requires build is the long-rumored bout between Punk and the returning Undertaker. When I first heard that such a match was in the works, my first thought was that Punk was going to be fed to the Undertaker’s streak. If you’ll recall in late 2009, Punk was in a feud with the Undertaker over the World Heavyweight Championship and was booked to look pathetic throughout. Rumors of a backstage slight courtesy of Punk led to speculation that Punk was being punished for his actions.
Had it not been for Punk’s historic title reign of the past year, I would have expected much of the same this April.
Now that Phil Brooks has established himself as a force to be reckoned with (hell, he was entrusted with the WWE Championship for OVER 400 DAYS), I’m actually more confident than ever that he might actually get the Undertaker and Vince McMahon’s blessing to do the unthinkable: kill The Streak.
The Undertaker reached his 20-0 milestone last year in what was billed as the “End of an Era.” Fast forward one full year and both men in that match are wrestling AGAIN, so what exactly “ended”? The WWE released the nice, round-numbered “20-0” DVD last year. There’s really no reason to keep it going at this point, in my honest opinion, and I know that will garner some heated responses in the comments section below. I think CM Punk is the man to end The Streak and shock the world.
Besides, how great would it be for Undertaker to be humbled by CM Punk, let the guy tout about it for a full year, and then have Taker return at Wrestlemania XXX to get his revenge and retire in a blaze of glory?
