The Fight Horizon – Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann
The main event for the UFC’s second event on Fox Sports 1 features a rematch between two of the most entertaining and versatile fighters in the world. “The Natural Born Killer” Carlos Condit looks to exact revenge on the first man to hand him a loss in the UFC, Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann. These two will meet once again nearly four years after their first fight.
The Matchup: Carlos Condit vs. Martin Kampmann
Martin Kampmann (20-6 overall, 11-5 in the UFC)
Strengths: Striking, never say die attitude, just plain lucky
Weaknesses: Gets into trouble often
Carlos Condit (28-7 overall, 5-3 in the UFC)
Strengths: Muay Thai, cardio, a chin of the highest grade iron
Weaknesses: Wrestling

What led to it: These are the last two guys to have lost to Johny Hendricks. Condit won that fight in the eyes of many, while Kampmann’s loss was much more definitive. Condit is on a two fight losing streak, but he’s still too good to matchup with most of the welterweight division. Kampmann hit a big bump with his loss to Hendricks, but was on a very nice streak before that, so he needs one of the top guys to stay relevant. These two are still very much in the mix at the top of the pile, and they’re both coming off of losses, so it’s time for them to dance once again.
Why it matters: Who stays in the mix at the top of the welterweight division? GSP moving up to MW for an eventual showdown with Anderson Silva seems preordained, but it’s far from a certainty. If he leaves the division, it will leave a void in the WW division and the championship will essentially be up for grabs. Both of these guys are capable of beating anyone on a given night, and if GSP does indeed vacate the title, both Kampmann and Condit have the goods to win it.
Both guys have come a long way since their first fight. Kampmann has seen his ups and downs, losing close contests and getting knocked out cold, but also pulling off stunning comeback victories against the likes of Thiago Alves and Jake Ellenberger. He most recently fell victim to Johny Hendricks’ famous punching power, but was on a very impressive three fight win streak before that. He could put himself in prime position for a run at the title with an impressive win here, since Hendricks defeated Condit to earn a title shot and Condit already lost to GSP. There aren’t many valid challengers at WW after Hendricks, so Kampmann has a chance here to open some eyes and make a case for himself.
Condit on the other hand, skyrocketed up the division after their first fight. He was a hair away from dethroning the greatest welterweight of all time in Georges St. Pierre. He was yet another victim to GSP’s relentless and unstoppable ground attack, but he proved to be a worthy contender. Condit followed that fight up with a razor-thin decision loss to Johny Hendricks, a fight which many (including me) thought he won. Condit impressed with his performance and ate a few of those famed Hendricks thunder punches, and while he didn’t just walk through them, he wasn’t as devastated as many others who have been tagged by Big Rigg. But a loss is a loss and that puts Condit in a two fight skid. He desperately needs a W here to avoid going 0 for 3. Condit is clearly a world-class fighter with elite striking, but he lost to two strong wrestlers. He has to show marked improvement in that area, or just be so insanely good with his striking that he earns a big finish. Condit’s future title hopes will depend greatly on what GSP decides to do, even with a win here it’s a tricky question to figure out what happens next. But Condit has to walk out with a victory before anything else.
Look for these two guys to come out on a mission. They are two of the toughest, most durable guys in the WW division and both have the skill to put the other guy down in a variety of ways. This one’s got Fight of the Night written all over it.
