‘TUF 17’ winner Kelvin Gastelum to meet Paulo Thiago at UFC On FOX Sports 1 #2

News

Following his upset victory over Uriah Hall to become the winner of season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter”, Kelvin Gastelum has his first post-TUF fight set for August.

Gastelum (6-0, 1-0 UFC), who won TUF 17 as a middleweight, will make his official move to the welterweight division to take on UFC veteran Paulo Thiago (15-5, 5-5 UFC) at the UFC On FOX Sports 1 #2 fight card. Globo reported the bout on Tuesday.

Gastelum has won all six of his professional fights, with his first five wins all coming by stoppage. He defeated Kito Andrews, Bubba McDaniel, Collin Hart and Josh Samman on his way to the finals of ‘TUF 17’, where he was a big underdog against Hall, who knocked out three straight opponents on his way to the finals. Gastelum brought the fight to Hall and took home the split decision to earn the six-figure contract with the UFC. For his second fight, though, he steps up in competition against a fighter who has more UFC fights than Gastelum has in his career.

Thiago is looking to score back-to-back wins for the first time since 2010. He recently defeated Michel Prazeres by unanimous decision at UFC On FX 8 in May. After starting his UFC career with three wins in his first four fights, Thiago has lost four of his last six fights. He has fought some of the best the UFC has had to offer, with fights against the likes of Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann.

UFC On FOX Sports 1 #2 takes place on August 28 from the Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann will meet in the night’s five-round main event.
