Quantum and Woody: Goat #0 is a fun issue to review.  Quantum and Woody itself is a spectacular display of comic awesomeness with lots of humor and wit sprinkled on its top.  If you haven’t read this book yet you are missing out.

I’m not sure if this review will actually sway you into going to read the series.  That’s because this issue is basically the “origin story” of the duo’s goat Vincent Van Goat.  Unlike mainstays like Rocket Raccoon or Howard the Duck, Vincent does not talk (other than saying “Meh”).  He doesn’t walk on two legs.  He really is just a goat.

Well not just a goat.  Because they are not many goats out there who have laser beams coming out of their friggin eyes.  Vincent is special because he was engineered to be so.  Basically he causes mass amounts of chaos wherever he goes.  Because what else is a goat with friggin laser beam eyes going to do?

This origin issue follows Vincent starting at his days on the farm where he falls in love with Dolly – that cloned sheep that was literally all over the news.  Vincent decides it’s true love and breaks out of the farm to find Dolly.  He travels the world looking for his beloved and finally hears on the news that Dolly is going to be at a science convention.

The goat decides to attend where he actually gets scooped up by a teenage Woody and Eric (Quantum).  They are there because their dad is working on super awesome sciencey stuff.  Vincent is able to get away from them only to fall into the hands of the group known as Edison’s Radical Acquisitions.  It’s this group that experiments on the dear goat and makes him the goat he is today – laser beams and all.

It’s a funny issue.  This zero issue takes all the great things about Quantum and Woody and slams it into a 24 page story about a goat.  And it’s good.  I found myself laughing several times at the book (out loud to boot) as I read the adventures of…a goat.  It’s a book about a goat!  And it’s brilliant!

The fact of the matter is as a zero issue goes this is not the best place to start if you are looking to get into Quantum and Woody.  Go buy a trade and revel at its amazingness.  This issue is here to entertain you with an ancillary character that can kill you with a look of its laser beam eyes.  It adds nothing to the overall story other than to solely entertain.  And entertain it does.  It’s a love letter to fans of this quirky series and does an exceptional job in its duties.

If your a fan you’ll love the book.  If you aren’t a fan it’s only because you haven’t read this book.  No time like the present to find out why this book is called brilliant.  I guess that’s all I really have to say about a book about a goat.  READ AWAY!

OVERALL: 9/10
