Murtz On The Scene: Exclusive Interview With The Following‘s Shawn Ashmore

The Following is the most exciting drama currently on television.

The slick series which follows Ryan Hardy’s pursuit of serial killer Joe Carroll has only gotten better in its sophomore run and while some questioned what the writers would do after their lead villain presumably died in the first season finale, the second season has added new depth to the show and even more killers for Hardy to chase.

One of the strongest aspects of The Following is its phenomenal supporting cast including Shawn Ashmore’s Mike Weston. Serving as the Watson to Ryan Hardy’s proverbial Sherlock Holmes in the first season, Ashmore’s character now has a central role in the series. Initially serving simply as Hardy’s voice of reason, the death of his father has led Weston to lose himself to his own rage, adding more layers to the mild-mannered law enforcement agent that we became used to when The Following first debuted.

On June 6 2013, I had the chance to catch up with Ashmore at the CTV Upfront at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts. Topics discussed include the influence 24 had on The Following, its thrilling pace, and why serial killers are so interesting to people. We also discussed what it is like to work with Kevin Bacon, and if the show can exist with the character of Joe Carroll.

The second season of The Following airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on CTV in Canada.
