Murtz On The Scene: Behind-The-Scenes Of Orphan Black with Evelyne Brochu

The day has finally arrived.

Orphan Black returns tonight.

The smart and sexy Canadian thriller single-handedly revitalized Space Channel’s programming line-up last season and tonight’s second season premiere of the show is one of the most highly-anticipated show returns in recent memory. The series stars Canadian Tatiana Maslany who plays a series of cloned characters and the show focuses on the mysteries surrounding her birth and creation.

In the Season 2 premiere of Orphan Black, Sarah Manning (Tatiana Maslany) is out of options, on the run, and being pursued by new adversaries. Desperate to find her daughter Kira (Skylar Wexler), Sarah’s luck eventually runs out as she is brought face-to-face with “pro-clone” Rachel (Maslany). The second season not only introduces new enemies for Sarah to face, but also reintroduces ones that fans of the show thought were already dead. While securing the return of her daughter will always be Sarah’s primary motivation, it’s clear that she is also now fighting to find bigger answers and that makes the scope of the second season much more compelling. While Manning was a reluctant heroine last year, she has now both embraced and accepted her role as a cloned Femme Fatale and that makes her much more dangerous… and attractive. If the season premiere is any indication, the show only improves upon what it already accomplished last year. Effortlessly fusing strong writing with engaging character portrayal, Orphan Black is both intellectually-stimulating and adrenaline-pumping. While many shows are described as featuring ‘edge-of-your-seat excitement,’ that description doesn’t adequately describe the Orphan Black experience. Why? Because it is impossible to watch Orphan Black sitting down. It is stand-up, catch-your-breath, and figure out what just happened entertainment.

On January 8, 2014, I visited the set of Orphan Black. While on set, I was given an exclusive tour of The DYAD Institute and Dr. Aldous Leekie’s office by cast member Evelyne Brochu (who plays Dr. Delphine Cormier). Before the tour, we discussed the show’s success and how Brochu has basically become the show’s lead supporting female (given all of the different characters on Maslany’s docket). We also chatted about the risqué lesbian storyline that Brochu’s character is involved and how science and love is intertwined for both Delphine and Cosima. I asked Brochu if the show becomes increasingly complex in its second season and if the show can only be enjoyed by ‘smart’ fans.

Don’t forget to check out my interview with Tatiana Maslany as well.
