Justice League United #0 hits stands today. Before we get to the issue, there are a few things you need to know about the journey that got us to this point:
- DC Comics originally announced that their New 52 Justice League of America series would be cancelled after Forever Evil #7, they indicated that a new series called Justice League of Canada would replace it.
- It was later actually solicited as Justice League United, but would feature the Justice League of Canada who would also get some space-faring adventures when not in Canada.
- Despite DC Comics reluctance to have Canada on the book’s cover, the variant cover for Justice League United #1 will be emblazoned with “Justice League Canada” (no “of” any longer).
- Justice League United #0 takes place after Justice League of America #14 because it, a few other titles, and Forever Evil #7 have been pushed back to May 2014.
Ok, Justice League United #0 SPOILERS follow.
In the preview to Justice League United #0 we learned that Adam Strange’s love interest Alanna in the DC Comics New 52 is no longer Caucasian, but a visible minority. She is kidnapped despite the United efforts of Justice League Canada.
We learn who the big bad is behind the cosmic kidnapping! He’s a classic DC Comics villain who makes his New 52 debut.
For those interested, what follows is the 1980’s Who’s Who entry for the classic Hawkman villain Byth! In the 1980’s Hawkworld series the character looked different and sported a facial tattoo. Lastly to the far left, we have a cool page from Byth’s debut in 1961’s The Brave and The Bold #34.
We also learn who else has been caught alongside Adam Strange’s Alanna and who that character will face next issue.
The New 52’s New Lobo appears to be the employ of Byth. The character debuted during 2013’s Villains Month and has popped up elsewhere including in the pages of Supergirl. Looks like he hasn’t caught up with the Fake Lobo still running around DC Comics.
So, the Marvel Studio’s Avengers film featured that team relaxing with some nice Shawarma after saving New York City. So, what is DC Comics’ answer to that in Justice League United #0? Well its fries plus cheese curds and gravy a.k.a. classic Canadian POUTINE!
Overall, this was a great read and I think I got more than I paid for with the $3.99 cover price. Great story by writer Jeff Lemire and awesome art by Mike McKone. Well worth the read.
Thanks for reading. All feedback welcome.
