In a somewhat surprising turn of events, TNA Impact is moving to Wednesday nights on Spike TV, beginning next week.

Spike TV officially announced it on twitter today:

The move is said to be for two key reasons. First, WWE is strongly rumored to be moving WWE Smackdown from Friday to Thursday this fall. Secondly, the NFL is pushing Thursday Night Football harder than ever with a new deal on CBS. Spike could be looking to maximize ratings with the possibility of two major new competitors.

In addition, this is being viewed as a positive sign for TNA staying with Spike TV. The TV contract runs for 6-7 more weeks, so it doesn’t seem to make sense to make a long-term minded schedule change for a show that is likely to go off the air.
