Well this is unexpected.
Grey’s Anatomy supercouple Derek and Meredith will face some tough times in the upcoming 11th season of the show. With Meredith refusing to go with Derek to his dream job in Washington, it appears that the couple that could survive hurdle may finally have found one that they can’t climb past.
The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, opened up to TVLine about the potential of a divorce.
“I’m not going to say that Meredith and Derek are never going to break up,” Rhimes said. “I’m not going to say that simply because we’re writing a story and we’re on this long, long journey. I’ve learned never to say absolutes about anything anymore. People always say, ‘Seven seasons ago you said… ‘ Well, I didn’t think we’d still be here.”
The EP said that she was interested in writing about how the couple would sort through these issues, so while a break-up might be teased, it still just might a plotline as the two doctors inevitably find their way back to each other.
“I was not interested in telling the story of a really good marriage that breaks up because of this,” she explains. “There’s work involved in keeping an amazing marriage amazing, and I would personally like to watch what happens when [they try] to fight through it.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns on Thursday, September 25 in its new 8 pm timeslot.
