Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Still Thinks A Fight With Gennady Golovkin Will Happen

News, Top Story

Even though he has been inactive since March when he defeated Bryan Vera, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1-1, 32 KOs) still thinks that a fight with WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (30-0, 27KOs) is on the table.

While the fight was initially discussed a couple of months ago, the negotiations hit a snag when Chavez was unable to come to terms with his Top Rank promoter.

Now that his contact with Top Rank is set to expire with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum claiming that the Mexican boxer still owes the company another fight before October 15 of 2015,it appears the fighter has his own plans in mind.

“To make that fight everyone must come to an agreement, but [Top Rank] wanted a contract extension. I wanted to fight him, but I have to think about my future. In fact the bout with Golovkin has not fallen off, I can still fight him. The fight Golovkin could happen later this year or in early 2015. It’s not that I didn’t want to face him, there were contract issue. In fact I was really excited to fight with Golovkin because everyone wants to see that fight. He is a great fighter, and people are speculating who can handle him, and that has to be someone who has good chin – and that’s me,” Chavez Jr. said.
