Murtz On The Scene: Exclusive Interview With The McCarthys’ Tyler Ritter, Kelen Coleman, & Jimmy Dunn

Tonight marks the season premiere of The Millers on CTV and CBS.

The multi-camera comedy is about a loud, sports-crazed Boston family whose somewhat athletically challenged son Ronny (Tyler Ritter) is chosen by his father, Arthur, (Jack McGee) to be his assistant high school basketball coach. The decision shocks the rest of the family who all feel they are more qualified to assume the position. While Ronny yearns to leave home and find a partner, he is touched by his father’s offer and decides to change the course he has been planning. The show co-stars Jimmy Dunn, Kelen Coleman, and Laurie Metcalf.

While the show follows the traditional sitcom format, it seems to tackle non-traditional subject matter and it is for that reason (and CTV’s decision to schedule it after The Big Bang Theory, The Millers and Two And A Half Men, that it definitely has the ability to find an audience.

Over the summer, I caught up with Tyler Ritter, Kelen Coleman and Jimmy Dunn from The McCarthys to to discuss the new comedy series that premieres tonight on CTV. I compared style tips with the trio and we chatted about why people should give the show a chance. Coleman also offered a preview of what audiences can expect. We chatted about whether there is room for another comedy in primetime and Ritter promised that The McCarthys will deal with topics that other sitcoms simply aren’t.

I can tell you with certainty that this was my favourite interview from the Upfronts and that the three all seemed to click nicely with each other. There was a palpable chemistry between the trio and this resulted in a lot of fun on the carpet and my high hopes that this show will be one of this season’s biggest surprises.
