It seems like it’s been forever and a day since Pierre Morel captained a film. After the minor success of District B13 and the first Taken starring Liam Neeson, I thought Morel’s career as an action director would take off, but he hasn’t made anything since 2010’s From Paris With Love.
When I first heard that his next project, The Gunman, would be his first non-EuropaCorp production, I was intrigued. No longer would Morel have to answer to Luc Besson. Then when the cast started to line up, as Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba came on board, my eyes lit up. Penn doing his first action movie? You betcha. And judging from this first trailer from Open Road Films and Yahoo! Movies I can’t wait to see what audiences have in store this March.
In The Gunman, Penn plays Jim Terrier, a man with a vicious past who distances himself from his previous employer. But when his ladylove (played by Jasmine Trinca) gets ensnared in an attempt to bring him out, Penn goes full-on Rambo with guns, knives and explosive devices.
