Murtz On The Scene – The Voice 7 Finale – Exclusive Red Carpet Video Interview With Matt McAndrew

Matt McAndrew delivered on Monday night’s performance finale edition of The Voice, and I believe that the Team Adam member will be named the Season 7 champion.

The show’s final competitive episode of the season asked contestants to sing a final solo that was picked by their coach, a duet with said coach and, for the first time ever, their own single which was also accompanied with a music video.

Just like all of his performances this season, it would be tough to pick McAndrew’s best performance of the night but perhaps the best assertion of his dominance was how well his original track, “Wasted Love” was charting on iTunes at the time of this piece. The fact that fans were so quick to embrace a song that they haven’t heard before speaks volumes about the impact that the New Jersey native has made this season. Personally, I thought that it rivalled Amanda Brown’s “Dream On” cover as the best single performance in Voice history.

With that said, McAndrew’s other performances were just as top-notch.

His duet with Adam Levine was also splendid as the pair collaborated on a beautiful cover of Levine’s own “Lost Stars.” With their melodies perfectly synchronized, the mentor and pupil left the audience completely awestruck.

While McAndrew ended the show, with a somewhat surprising choice of “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” (although, to be fair, it was Adam’s pick), he still managed to make fans care about a song that we all already know so well. Why? Because Matt was singing it and it is this fact alone that makes me predict Matt McAndrew as this season’s champion, regardless of whether Carson Daly reads his name on Tuesday or not.

After the show, I had the chance to catch up with McAndrew (after getting a great deal on a flight from Air Canada’s website that also included some amazing service). We discussed what his favourite performance of the night was and he also opened up about the genre of music he enjoys most. I asked him if he liked doing old classics or if he leaned toward doing some more contemporary material (as he has found success in both categories all season). I asked him if he thought guys with glasses have an advantage on The Voice as Josh Kaufman was the Season 6 winner and McAndrew is widely expected to follow suit. We chatted about what the rapport on Team Adam was like and if he really got along with Damien and Chris as they are all competing against each other for the ultimate title. McAndrew also admitted that his “Wasted Love” original single was a good indication of where his album might go musically. As he was the last performer of the night, I asked McAndrew if singing last offered an advantage in terms of voting (as he would be the last face that fans would see before beginning to vote) and if he felt like this ‘perform last, finish first’ theory had any merit. Matt also gave me some advice about getting inked for the first time and broke down whether chicks prefer singers or guys with ink.
