Alexander Lucard

  • The Death-Defying Dr. Mirage (2014) #5 (of 5)
  • Rai (2014) #6

Ouch. Only two this week and both are Valiant.

Paul Miranda

  • ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA #3 – I was only going to buy the first issue just because. Plus, I’m not always a fan of Remender’s writing even if he tackles the big-name heroes. However, #1 blew me away and was a rip-roaring romp. I was clamoring for more!! The end of #2 left me aghast. I need to see more. I’m beyond thrilled that Sam Wilson is such a natural fit for the red, white, and blue.
  • ARROW: SEASON 2.5 #4 – Need to satisfy my archer fixation. The TV series just ain’t enough!! Plus, the photo covers are always grabbing.
  • AVENGERS #34.2, AVENGERS #40 – I’m back after a foolish hiatus. I can never turn my back on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. I like how there’s a supplementary issue focusing on one of the newer members. Plus, in the regular series, as time runs out, I’m glad Hickman’s lllooonnnggg arc is finally heading to a definite end.
  • BATGIRL #38 – Charming, witty, and just all around cutesy. I’m gushing over this book and more importantly over Barbara Gordon herself. What else awaits?
  • BATMAN ETERNAL #41 (of 52) – The end is nigh. I’m not entirely surprised that Riddler is the big bad here. He deserves all the respect he can get. Although I’m rooting for him, after this weekly concludes, it’s time to focus on the numerous other rogues in Batman’s gallery.
  • DAREDEVIL #12 – Solid all the way through. I’m said to see that Waid & Samnee will end their run in the next few months. DD really needs a superior successor to keep this book on the radar. One of the most intelligent series out there. Characterization is beyond compelling.
  • GRAYSON #6 – Another solid read. I’m not the greatest fan of spy fiction but I really, really love Dick Grayson. Although I’d prefer to see him in a costume instead of combat fatigues or civvies, I’m anxious to see him unmask Mr. Minos and hook up with Helena!! Enough already!
  • SPIDER-VERSE #2 (of 2) – How this ships before the other tie-ins and minis wrap up is beyond me. Despite being a series of shorts, maybe it should’ve been very last since it was announced/implied that it’s a bookend.
  • STAR WARS {2nd Series} #1 – To say that this the BIG ONE is a huge understatement To be honest, I was just going to buy the first issue for collectable value. Now I’ve been assigned to read it and review it. We shall see.

John Babos

Seven books this week.

  • Earth 2 World’s End #15 & New 52 Futures End #37 – Intrigued by how these two weekly books lead into Convergence.
  • Justice League United #8 – So glad DC is doing something meaningful with the Legion of Super-Heroes. A post-Convergence LOSH ongoing in the offing? Let’s hope.
  • New Suicide Squad #6 – Loving the writing, but find the art choppy. Still, the SS concept is one of the best ever.
  • Star Trek #40 – Q and the reboot movie crew. What’s not to like?
  • Superman / Wonder Woman #15 – Great writing and art along with new and old villains. The book feels fresh and a must-read under the new creative team. From the writer that brought the Damian Wayne Robin back to life WITH super-powers.
  • Worlds’ Finest #30 – Another ongoing title of mine set for the 2015 DC implosion.

A small, but interesting week of reads for me. No Marvel and Valiant books this week for me despite Marvel’s relaunch of Star Wars comics for Disney post with a shiny new #1. I do want to say I enjoyed the few SW minis I read when Dark Horse did had the Star Wars license, and how intrigued Marvel’s SW offerings look; with that I’ll probably only try the first issue of the Darth Vader ongoing book that ships in the near future.

Mike “Skitch” Maillaro

There are a lot of comics I am really looking forward to this week, so here are some highlights:

  • Star Wars #1 – It’s been a long time since I was this excited about Star Wars, but Rebels has gone a long way towards getting my interest back up. I love that Marvel is putting big name creative teams on their Star Wars books. I just hope they can keep the quality more consistent than Dark Horse did. Dark Horse had too many titles and they were all over the place. Oddly enough, it seems when Marvel got the rights from Dark Horse, they somehow ended up with the rights to all the digital trades. They added a ton of Star Wars trades under the Marvel banner on Comixology this week. This week’s Open Mike Night is going to be Star Wars-focused.
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 – The first issue of SHIELD really surprised me. I had high hopes for it, and Waid and Pacheco managed to exceed them. Ms Marvel will be stopping by the next issue, so I’m really hyped up for this one.
  • Astro City #19 – In terms of quality, Astro City has been consistently great for the last twenty years. The current story is dealing with what it’s like for a hero to get “too old for this shit” and I’ve really enjoyed seeing Quarrel and Crackerjack develop over the course of Astro City. Astro City has always been about moving forward (new Confessor, new Jack in the Box, etc), so I wonder if we’ll be seeing the debut of a New Crackerjack.
  • Silver Surfer #8 – ABOUT TIME! I’ve been enjoying this series a lot; Slott and Allred are a great team…but I have been waiting a long time for issue 8. The last issue came out November 12. But, it’s a terrific series with strong, funny writing and beautiful art. So I can’t complain too much. I’d rather wait two months for a great comic than have something rushed out.
  • Doctor Who 10th Doctor #6 – I got to read this as a reviewer’s preview. This issue features the Weeping Angels attacking English and German soldiers during World War I. This was actually the first real great issue of the Tenth Doctor’s series. Everything came together into a real dark and disturbing story here. There is an image showing what one soldier did to escape the Angels that will haunt me for a long time.
  • Justice League United #8 – I had some concerns about the early issues of this series, but when the Legion showed up, business really picked up. It’s still not quite what I would expect with Jeff Lemire and this group of characters, but it’s definitely getting there.
  • Amazing X-Men #15 – Ever since Chuck Austen gave Cain Marko a little more depth, I’ve liked the character a lot. I actually have used him as an NPC pretty consistently in the various X-Men RPG’s I’ve run over the years a lot. Yes, I am a nerd. I am really curious about what Yost has in mind for this “Once and Future Juggernaut” story. I’ll likely be reviewing this one.
  • Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man #9 – Last issue gave us some huge back story about why Mile’s dad has issues with superheroes. It was a real great twist, and definitely puts everything we know about these characters into question. Really looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

James Fulton

  • Star Wars #1 – I’m excited to see a new take on Star Wars, but I’m also feeling a little unsure of how impressed I’m really going to be. I’m working on a theory that says that the number of variant covers a comic has, and the extent to which the promotion of the comic involves those various covers is in inverse proportion to the actual quality of the comic. At the same time, it’s John Cassaday drawing Star Wars, so it has to be good, right?
  • Copperhead #5 – This book almost flew completely under my radar, but I think it’s the perfect title to recommend to any fan of Firefly/Serenity, or people who like Westerns or science fiction in general. Jay Faerber and Scott Godlewski are doing some very good work here.
  • Jupiter’s Legacy #5 – It’s been a long time since Mark Millar and Frank Quitely put out the last issue of this series (and here Mike’s complaining about Silver Surfer being a month late), but I was enjoying their look at superheroes through a neoconservative economics lens.
  • Grayson #6 – I’m still a little surprised by how much I like this comic, as the first issue or two didn’t really grab me. One thing I like about it is that it makes use of Midnighter, and now it looks like Dick and him are going to go at it for a whole issue. Should be cool.
  • The Walking Dead #136 – Any week with a new Walking Dead is going to be a good one.
