Blu-ray Review: Justice League: Throne Of Atlantis

Blu-ray Reviews, Reviews, Top Story

As I’ve stated in previous reviews of Warner Bros./DC animated films, they are very consistent in the quality of the animation and storytelling that they deliver. The one problem I’ve had is that many of the Justice League films start with the forming of team. This gets a little tiresome after awhile. However, Throne of Atlantis changes things up, as it is a direct sequel to War.

The team has been formed, but they still haven’t gelled, with Cyborg being the only one who spends any time at the base that’s been set up for them. However when a mystery surrounding the possible existence of Atlantis arises, Cyborg is able to get the gang back together.

It turns out a drifter named Arthur Curry is actually half human/half Atlantian and his mom is their queen. However, while she wants peace, her son, Orm, along with the help of Black Manta, wants war. So while Arthur is trying to understand his new found powers and his new found place in this world, he must team up with the Justice League to save the surface dwellers from the invading Atlantians.

The overall look and feel of the film is solid. It’s a very well animated and thought out story. The acting across the board is as solid as ever. The addition of Rosario Dawson as the voice of Wonder Woman is nice add to an already solid cast and Matt Lanter as is really great as Aquaman as well.

I must say, I’m a little biased, as I’ve never been the biggest Aquaman fan. So a story revolving around his origin isn’t going to do much for me. I didn’t go in with high hopes, nor did I go in expecting to hate it. Warner Bros is usually pretty consistent in their animated films, so I expected I would at least be mildly entertained, and that is exactly what I got. If you’re an Aquaman fan you’ll most likely enjoy this film more than I did. If you’re not an Aquaman fan like me, I’d suggest maybe skipping this one and waiting for the next.

The film is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 DTSHD-MA. surround sound . As always, this film looks and sounds fantastic. Warner Bros does it again!

You get Scoring Atlantis: The Sounds of the Deep: (30 min.) A very in-depth discussion about the score. Robin and Nightwing: bonus sequence: (4 min.) A very short film finishing up the Scarecrow part of the film. Atlantis 2014 NY Comic-Con Panel: (27 min.) This is a pretty solid Q&A. Atlantis Soundtrack Watch the film with score and sound effects only. Sneak Peak at Batman vs Robin: (10 min.) Interesting that they’re going to mix the story of Damien with comics Court of Owls storyline. Also, Weird Al as The Dollmaker should be pretty fun. Villains of the Deep: (11 min.) A look at Black Manta and Arthur’s brother, Orm. Four Bonus Cartoons: Two episodes Batman: The Brave And The Bold, and one episode each of Aquaman and Justice League Unlimited, all episodes being Aquaman focused of course, except the JLU episode.

For me this is easily one of the weaker offerings from Warner Bros/DC, but it was still a decent story. It entertained, it just didn’t blow me away. I imagine Aquaman fans are sure to enjoy it more than I did.
