It’s a good time to be Universal. In a world where Superhero movies and YA adaptations have dominated the box office, Universal has managed to become the highest grossing studio of the year by a comfortable margin without releasing a movie in either genre.
Part of that comes down to fortunate timing. Universal ended up having two of the biggest action movie releases this year with Furious 7 and Jurassic World. At the same time they were also getting the young audience with their Minions spin-off. But other movies were big hits for the studio as well. Pitch Perfect 2 made more money in its opening weekend than the first movie made in its entire run. And Universal’s recently released biopic Straight Outta Compton was the one that pushed Universal past the 5.5 billion mark.
Universal is so far ahead right now that it has almost made more money this year than the next three highest grossing studios combined. Only Disney has any real chance of beating it at this point with Star Wars at the end of the year.
The official box office for 2015 with Universal is at $5.53 billion which breaks the $5.52 billion record set by 20th Century Fox just last year.
