Sarah Silverman Snags Actress Nomination And Other Surprises From This Year SAG Nominees

News

The 22nd annual SAG Awards unveiled nominations this morning for both film and television. In a bit of a surprise, Bleecker Street’s Trumbo led the film category with three nominations including Bryan Cranston for lead actor, Helen Mirren, and best ensemble (in this case “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture”), which is the Screen Actors Guild equivalent to the Oscars’ Best Picture category.

The biggest surprise may be Sarah Silverman being nominated for lead actress for the Broad Green Pictures release I Smile Back. Silverman, who has mostly done bit parts or supporting characters since the late 1990s with roles in Overnight Delivery, There’s Something About Mary and Bulworth, got praised for her turn in 2011’s Take This Waltz, where she co-starred with Seth Rogen and Michelle Williams.

Other interesting choices for nominations include Helen Mirren’s lead performance in Woman in Gold, young actor Jacob Tremblay for Room and Rachel McAdams for Spotlight (while her co-stars Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo received no nominations). In terms of surprises was no Matt Damon for his performance in The Martian or an ensemble nod for Ridley Scott’s film. Also missing was ensemble recognition for David O. Russell’s Joy, headlined by Jennifer Lawrence, and Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight.

On the small screen, basic and premium cable dominate as do streaming outlets Netflix and Amazon, picking up nominations for programs like House of Cards, Transparent, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Orange is the New Black

ABC and CBS got some attention for programs How to Get Away with Murder (Viola Davis), Modern Family (Ty Burrell), The Good Wife (Julianna Margulies) and The Big Bang Theory (Jim Parsons), while Spike TV picked up its first nomination for its mini-series Tut, as Ben Kingsley was nominated for Best Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.

Winners will be revealed at the ceremony which airs Saturday, January 30 live on TNT and TBS.
