On Monday night’s performance finale, finalists Jordan Smith, Emily Ann Roberts, Jeffery Austin and Barrett Baber squared off for the last time. The contestants were each asked to sing a solo cover, a Christmas classic and a duet with their respective coach.

Team Gwen member, Jeffery Austin easily had the best performance of the night with his cover of Sugarland’s “Stay.” The soulful singer left his heart on the stage and was the first contestant who actually looked like they knew what the stakes were. Jeffery also had the best Christmas cover of the evening as well as he chose to take on “O Holy Night.” With his competitors choosing Christmas ballads that were far less traditional, it was nice to see the crowd hum along to something more mainstream. Really, I thought that Jeffery’s only weak moment was his duet with Gwen Stefani. The pair chose “Leather and Lace” and while it was okay, I would have preferred to see them take on a classic No Doubt song.

I caught up with Jeffery Austin on the red carpet after the show.
