DVD Review: Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Super Shredder)

DVD Reviews, Reviews, Top Story

As Nickelodeon’s CGI revamp of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues, it proves to be the most engrossing and entertaining of all the Turtles TV shows and movies. The plots touch back on the feel of the original comics before the Heroes on the Half Shell were completely aimed at elementary schoolers. This show is intended for at least a junior high student to enjoy. Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder brings back their most fearsome foe in a more powerful form.

“The Super Shredder” brings back the menace in large way with a plan to take out the turtles and Splinter. They five are no challenge to them and one appears to have been a victim of the brute. “Darkest Plihgt” has the Turtles go deep into the Undercity looking for Shredder and their presumed dead cohort. “The Power Inside Her” dips into April’s psonic capabilities. This season can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster for younger fans since a beloved character looks like he’s dead, is found alive and then is killed for real. You might not want to let your kid watch “Requiem” and “Owari” without sitting next to them. It’s also best to watch them back to back since there is a bit of emotional softening in the story.

What’s interesting is that this collection has the last seven episodes of season four and the first four episodes from season five including three that haven’t aired by the time of the DVD release. A kid is going to be ahead of the curve on the school bus if they pick this up on March 21. In case you were curious, the Fifth season is slated to be the last for this incarnation. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is slated to be the next series in 2018.

Here’s Josie’s take on this collection without any spoiling of the new episodes:

The videos is 1.78:1 anamorphic. The transfers look fine for the CGI universe. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. The levels let you feel the fighting moments around the room. The episodes are Closed Captioned.

No bonus features.
