John Babos

Only 5 books this week.

  • Deathstroke #22
  • Green Arrow #28
  • Green Lanterns #28
  • Justice League #26
  • New Gods Special #1

I tend now to open each month with a small week. Three of these titles are on my regular pull list, but two are new.

(1) New Gods Special #1 – Shane Davis on story and art intrigues me and I hope this month’s DC celebration of what would have been Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday month has legs beyond these one-shots. In terms of the New Gods, this is a pantheon that is geting some love across DC (upcoming Mister Miracle maxi-series, current DC’s Young Animal mini-series Bug: The Adventures of the Forager and an arc starting this month in Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps), but deserves its own ongoing series whether in Vertigo, DC’s Young Animal or DC Rebirth. We have a few Kirby 100 New Gods related one-shots, so I hope sales warrant more New Gods in the future in a way that ties to the rest of DC.

(2) Justice League #26 – We’re marching into the twilight of writer-artist Bryan Hitch’s run. I’m curious about this new arc that includes the future children of the Justice League as heroes in their own right, but set in modern day DC Rebirth continuity.

Matt Graham

  • Extremity #6
  • X-Men Gold #9
  • Generations: Hulk

I’ll need to check back on this list, but that seems to be it for me. Light week.

  • Deathstroke #22 – With Slade running his own super-team, you have to agree that this book is never predictable.
  • East of West #34 – I’m always happy to get a new issue of this terrific title. I hope that Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta are getting back on schedule, as this book is a few months late.
  • Elsewhere #1 – I’m intrigued by this new Jay Faerber series that stars Amelia Earhart in a fantasy world. I’m trying to trade wait more Image books lately though, so I’ll have to look at it pretty carefully before making my decision.
  • Stray Bullets: Sunshine & Roses #26 – I love David Lapham’s book.

Really small shopping list this week!

  • ALTERS #6 – ALTERS is back! The first arc ended back in March. I like that Aftershock is willing to put books on the shelf in between arcs. Image has been good about this too. I think it makes sense to put out comics when the story is there, not just pumping out an issue or two every month just to hit quotas. ALTERS feels very much like a modern version of a classic superhero series. It reminds me of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and X-MEN, but it deals with more modern day issues like gender identity. It’s definitely worth checking out.
  • GENERATIONS BANNER HULK AND THE TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1 – GENERATIONS gets off to a start with Hulks. I don’t know too much about GENERATIONS, but I like the idea of seeing the older generation characters teaming up with the newer versions. As a fan of classic Marvel and the newer characters, I am really hoping these books end up as good as the premise.
  • GREEN ARROW #28 – Ollie continues his world tour, teaming up with various Justice League members as he fights back against the Ninth Circle’s pervasive influence. I really enjoyed the Flash and Wonder Woman issues.
  • World Reader #5
  • Bane Conquest #4 (Of 12)
  • Batman #28
  • Green Lanterns #28
  • Nightwing #26
  • Superman #28
  • G.I. JOE A Real American Hero #242
  • Star Trek Waypoint #6 (Of 6)
  • Samaritan Veritas #3
  • All-New Guardians Of The Galaxy #7
  • Avengers #10
  • Champions #11
  • Hawkeye #9
  • Jessica Jones #11
  • Nick Fury #5
  • Spider-Man #19
  • Star Wars Darth Vader #4
  • Unstoppable Wasp #8
  • X-Men Gold #9
