It’s been almost three decades since the then WWF’s “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling” turned the figurative cartoon character WWE Superstars into literal cartoon superstars. Now with the Attitude Era firmly in the rearview mirror and the PG era in full swing, the time felt right to revisit the “WWE Superstars as cartoon characters” motif.

In “Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery,” the WWE Universe links up with the popular and long-running Mystery Inc. team, made up of Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo. Several WWE Superstars play prominent roles and are voiced by the real-life counterparts, such as John Cena, Triple H, Mr. McMahon, AJ Lee, Brodus Clay, The Miz, Santino Marella, Kane, and Michael Cole.

The WrestleMania mystery alluded to in the title centers around a nefarious plot by some ne’er-do-well to shut down WrestleMania and steal the WWE Championship belt. The WWE and Mystery Inc. universes are brought together when Shaggy and Scooby attain the high score on the official WWE video game and are personally invited by Mr. McMahon to come to WWE City (and are we really that far off from that becoming a thing?) and sit in the front row for WrestleMania. Fred, Velma, and Daphne are reluctant to accompany them at first, but eventually agree and the Mystery Machine is off to WWE City.

Unfortunately for the gang, WWE City has recently been terrorized by mysterious bear attacks, and rest assured this is no ordinary bear. This is a giant beast with red fur, yellow eyes, and a mouth full of glowing embers. As the gang tries to solve the mystery of the bear attacks, Scooby is framed for stealing the WWE Championship belt, and Mr. McMahon offers him a chance to prove his innocence by teaming with Shaggy to face Kane in a handicap match at WrestleMania.

The result is rather enjoyable little cartoon that meets the modest expectations it set forth in the premise. High-brow entertainment this is not, but Scooby-Doo is a time-tested formula that has proven itself over the years, and the WWE Superstars fit in nicely. The attention to detail is actually pretty strong, with signature moves present for each wrestler, and even little details like Kane’s two different colored eyes are noticeable.

If nothing else, “Scooby-Doo! WrestleMania Mystery” is worth it for a shot of an animated Vince McMahon chanting “Scooby-Doo! Scooby-Doo!” It’s just as ridiculous as it sounds.

I grew up and now I write for Inside Pulse. Oh, and one time I saw a blimp!
