Blu-Ray Review – The Mountain Between Us

It’s always interesting to see what incredibly skilled actors can do when they’re given a number of different thread lines in a character piece. Idris Elba and Kate Winslet show that even in a CGI heavy battle against the element that something interesting can happen.

Simple premise. Dr. Bass (Elba) and Alex (Winslet) need to get to the same destination and can’t. When they decide to take a small plane together they wind up the survivors of a crash that kills their pilot. With help not coming, the two have to find their way back to civilization in the middle of a cold, harsh wilderness.

It’s a basic tale of survival meshed with a quasi-love story and for the most part it works because of its two leads. It’s not the best use of their talents but this is a competently made film that knows how to hit the notes it has to. The only problem is that the film doesn’t know when to end; the film has a terrific finale and then about another half hour that feels unnecessary.

A handful of interesting EPK pieces highlight the Blu-Ray.
