  • X-Men Wedding Special #1 – Shocked this book is a Marvel-cheap $3.99.
  • Cable #157 -Cable is shaping up to be one of the best new books out of Marvel this spring. The art encompasses the wartorn-bio-tech aesthetic Cable and his apocalyptic future are known for, and the writers are reaching for the deep cuts like Redd and Slym, kid Hope, evil Bishop, and now X-Man. Plus, Cable and Hope’s Lone Wolf and Cub schtick will never not be charming even if it’s the formula of the moment in a lot of entertainment.

X-Men books always win me over when they acknowledge and use the rich history of nonsense that has gone on before while still finding new things to play with in it, and putting new ideas into the mess.

  • Batwoman #14 – I’ve loved Kate Kane since her introduction. I buy everything Marguerite Bennett puts out. Fernando Blanco’s ink-drenched art is an inspiration to me, and John Rauch is one of my favourite colourists in the business for his moody contrasts.

Yet, whenever I read reviews saying this is one of DC’s better comics, I’m puzzled. Sure, I buy it, it’s one of the few DC books I buy month to month. It’s just been a torturous year for this story. I’m a fan of slow-burning stories and I believe that most modern comics, thanks to a shift in thought on pacing, read better in trade, but this book seems fixated on outdoing The Last Jedi in unneccessary water-treading.

Part 3 of The Fall of the House of Kane pulls all the strings of the last year together, and I reread it all in one shot after reading Parts 1 and 2. I liked it better as a binge. The book succeeds on focusing on Kate Kane and keeping stakes personal. Bennett understands that Kate is unique among other Bats, driven by anger and letting her past control her emotions. It falls apart with yet another of DC’s long-game untold secret origin stories (No, I did not enjoy The War of Jokes and Riddles or Year Zero) and uninteresting red herrings along the way.

I’d love to see this iteration of Kate get some room to kick around, but solicitations forecast the book closing at #18, which is when House of Kane concludes. Which is worse, a creative team and character you enjoy being benched, or the fact the product isn’t something you’d be excited to recommend? Note to self, use this as a template to talk about the end of Mother Panic next time that drops.

James Fulton:  Wedding Special is $4.99 at Midtown Comics, who are always right about stuff like that.

I don’t have a lot to say about this week. There’s some good stuff coming out that I’m looking forward to though.

Barrier, Crude, Gideon Falls, Daredevil, Punisher, X-Men Red, Ballad of Sang, and Ninja-K are all books I’ve been getting a lot of enjoyment out of lately.

Matt: It’s a quiet week compared to the usual wallet onslaught.

Only a couple highlights for me, but otherwise still a good week.

  • Gideon Falls #3 – The second issue proved just as interesting as the first, I’m excited to see where this story goes.
  • New Challengers #1 – I had hoped the Challengers were going to make a bigger appearance in Metal, and though it’s a new crew I’m glad we are getting a series out of it.
  • Superman Special #1 – I’m always up for a trip back to Dinosaur Island, especially if the Losers are there too.

Lots of Marvel books I want to talk about this week…

  • INFINITY COUNTDOWN DAREDEVIL #1 – To me, this is just a very unlikely and unnecessary crossover. Typically Daredevil keeps out of Marvel’s big sweeping events, but he seems to have a major role in INFINITY COUNTDOWN and HUNT FOR WOLVERINE. The concept for this story (the mind gem is being held by a crime boss) is pretty cool, but it just doesn’t feel like a DAREDEVIL story to me…
  • QUICKSILVER NO SURRENDER #1 – It’s always weird when a comic series features a cliffhanger like “DID QUICKSILVER DIE?” when you have already solicited a miniseries starring that character. I’ve been a fan of Quicksilver since his X-FACTOR days.
  • STAR WARS POE DAMERON #27 – While I have been enjoying this series, the last issue was a huge surprise. The first 25 issues were set before THE FORCE AWAKENS. Issue 26 starts just moments after THE LAST JEDI ends and fills in some of the blanks from THE FORCE AWAKENS and THE LAST JEDI. I thought it was a really cool way to keep this series relevant and finally bring all the heroes together.
  • AVENGERS #2 – Loved the interaction with Thor, Cap, and Iron Man in the first issue of this series. This is an AVENGERS series on an epic scale, and Jason Aaron is a great fit for this type of book.
  • SUPERMAN SPECIAL #1 – Not really sure what the point of ACTION COMICS SPECIAL and SUPERMAN SPECIAL were, but I did enjoy ACTION COMICS SPECIAL, so I am sure I will be picking this one up too.
  • X-MEN WEDDING SPECIAL #1 – Comic book weddings never go well. This actually is not the Kitty Pryde/Colossus Wedding (they are getting married in X-MEN GOLD #30 next month), it is the story of their bachelor/bachelorette parties.
  • Jimmy’s Bastards #8
  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27
  • Batman #47
  • Future Quest Presents #10
  • Green Lanterns #47
  • Justice League No Justice #2 (Of 4)
  • Star Trek The Next Generation Through The Mirror #3
  • Curse Words #14
  • Gideon Falls #3
  • Kick-Ass #4
  • All-New Wolverine #35
  • Ben Reilly The Scarlet Spider #18
  • Daredevil #602
  • Hunt For Wolverine Claws Of A Killer #1 (Of 4)
  • Mighty Thor At The Gates Of Valhalla #1
  • Punisher #224
  • Weapon H #3
  • X-Men Red #4
  • Bloodshot Salvation #9
  • Ninja-K #7
