Columns, Top Story

Welcome to Image Rundown!

Here’s a quick look at everything Image Comics is releasing this week, with highlights and quick reviews for new series and collected editions as well as good jumping-on points for new readers. Let’s get started!

No new series kicking off and no collected editions, but plenty of arc finales which means new jump-on points can be right around the corner. Or if you just can’t wait, this is a good week to walk around your comic shop or bookstore a little more and discover new things! At the bottom of the article I’ve included a list of some of my favorite recent titles that may not have made it to some reader’s shelves yet.

New Series and Highlights

Kill or Be Killed #20 – Series finale! It’s been a crazy ride, but all good things must come to an end. If you haven’t checked out this series yet, I recommend starting with Vol. 01 now since the ending I’m sure will be the talk of the town for a while; that is until the OGN My Heroes Have All Been Junkies from the same creative team (Brubaker/Phillips) comes out, scheduled for this October. If you still need something to fill in the months, Fatale and Criminal are on my list to check out soon.

Descender #31 – The penultimate issue! This has become one of my favorite Jeff Lemire series, and I’ve always been a big fan of Dustin Nguyen especially his water color works. I’ll miss it on the shelves after next month, but Lemire still has plenty of books out now and I’m looking forward to whatever Dustin has coming next.

Sex Criminals #25 – Arc finale! We come to the end of arc number 5, and it looks to be a doozy for the crew.

Black Cloud #10 – Arc finale, and everything is on fire.

Hack/Slash: Resurrection #8 – Guest starring Vampirella!

Outcast #36 – Arc finale, and the fight is just heating up.

Continuing Series

  • Bloodstrike #23
  • Cyber Force #4
  • Gasolina #9
  • The Realm #7
  • Royal City #12
  • Saga #53
  • Stray Bullets: Sunshine and Roses #36
  • The Wicked + The Divine #37

Collected Editions and OGNs

No new TPBs, HCs, or OGNs out this week, so if you still have an itch for something new I recommend these titles:

Afar OGN – From Leila Del Duca and Kit Seaton comes the story of a young woman who sees distant lands and interesting people in her dreams, until she learns they’re more than just dreams; she has the ability to astral project, and her actions while projecting have real consequences.

Velvet Vol. 01 Before the Living End TPBOptioned for a possible TV show late last year on Paramount’s new channel, I’m hoping for a series continuation since it’s been almost two years since the last issue came out and Image has used the phrase “first fifteen issues” a few times. So if you haven’t checked out this series, this might be the week to do so.

The Old Guard, Book One: Opening Fire TPB – Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez tell a fascinating story of a team of immortals who secretly help keep the peace around the world.

Nowhere Men Vol. 01 Fates Worse Than Death TPB – This first volume came out over four and a half years ago and, though it hasn’t finished yet, issues 7 through 11 are out with 12 not yet solicited. Part history of “The Beatles” of science, part trippy space epic, all great story and mind-blowing art.
