NFL 2011: Randy Moss Retires From Football at 34 Mon, 01 Aug 2011 18:25:13 +0000 Future Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss has decided to retire after age 34.

During this crazed free agency run, the All-Pro wide out has seen different offers from teams, and after deliberations with his agent Joel Segal, has decided that his best option for his career is to retire.

“After weighing his options and contemplating offers, he’s decided to retire,” Segal was quoted early on Monday.

Moss, drafted 21st overall by Minnesota in 1998, spent his first seven seasons with the Vikings, then played for the Oakland Raiders in 2005 and 2006. He then took his talents to New England, where he broke the record for touchdowns in a single season with 23. In 2010, he moved from the Pats, back to the Vikings, and then finally ended up in Tennessee, having been traded more times than any other player in history in a single season.

Moss ends his storied career with 954 receptions (only ten wide outs were ever able to accomplish), 14858 receiving yards (fifth all time), and 153 touchdowns (second only to Hall of Famer Jerry Rice).

With these stats, if Randy Moss stays retired, he will definitely be a shoe-in to be a Hall-of-Famer. Moss will become Hall-of-Fame eligable in the same class as quarterback Brett Favre.

Here’s to you Randy Moss for a great career. You will be missed.×120.jpg

NFL: Former NFL Superstar Plaxico Burress Has a New Home Mon, 01 Aug 2011 01:00:17 +0000 The Jets were deciding on whether to re-sign Braylon Edwards, or even Randy Moss with their cap room. We now know which receiver they have selected. The New York Jets have stayed local, agreeing with the former Giants Super-Bowl star Plaxico Burress on a one-year contract, announced by the Jets on Sunday.

Burress’ deal is worth 3.017 million dollars for one year with all of it guaranteed, as reported by ESPN.

The Jets, having shown interest in Burress two years ago before he served a 20-month prison sentence on gun charges, advanced their pursuit of the wide out Friday, the same day that Burress visited the Giants to discuss the possibility of playing there once again. On Saturday, he visited the Pittsburg Steelers, his rookie team, where he stated that the 49ers and Jets were both heavily interested in his sevices, and today has announced his signing to New York.

On the other side of Burress will be the recently signed, former Steelers’ Super Bowl MVP, Santonio Holmes. The Jets re-signed Holmes to a five-year, $50 million contract and decided to let WR Braylon Edwards, who wouldn’t lower his contract asking price, leave New York.

With this move, the Jets look to not need another receiver, and with the cap room they have made, there is no telling what their next transaction, if any, could possibly be.×120.jpg

MLB: Ubaldo Jimenez Traded to Cleveland Sun, 31 Jul 2011 13:00:37 +0000 The Cleveland Indians on Saturday acquired Colorado Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez, the Rockies have confirmed.

The Cleveland players that are going to Colorado will include top pitching prospects Alex White, Drew Pomeranz, and Joe Gardner, along with C/IF/OF Matt McBride. Pomeranz, who was pulled from his start in Class AA on Saturday, is ineligible to be traded until Aug. 15 due to the fact that he was drafted last June.

The deal is also pending due to a necessary physical examination on Jimenez to be performed by Cleveland medical staff for Sunday.

Jimenez made his scheduled start against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, but Esmil Rogers warmed up in the bullpen even before Jimenez threw his first pitch. Jimenez was pulled after the first inning. Afterwards, he immediately began shaking hands and hugging with teammates, then went into the clubhouse, and packed up his locker.

Even though Jimenez has put up sub-par at best numbers this season, he was still considered during the trade deadline to be the top potential trade pickup at the pitcher position.

Their main ace, Jimenez is known by Rockies fans as the only pitcher from that franchise to ever throw a no-hitter.

Rockies Executive Vice President, Chief Baseball Officer/General Manager Dan O’Dowd commented on the trade; “This was a very difficult decision for us to make, but our focus with this deal was to make our team better in the very near future and we feel like we were able to do that in this situation. We believe the timing of this deal also allowed us to maximize the value we were able to get in return.”

With the Indians in the playoff hunt, this definitely shakes up American League Central Division, with the Indians receiving this great starting pitcher to a long-time weak bullpen. This move without a doubt will be able to help the Indians have a shot to beat Detroit for the Division Title.

NFL: Peyton Manning Re-signs With the Colts Sun, 31 Jul 2011 13:00:09 +0000 An injured Peyton Manning, for the last several days, has been resisting Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay’s moves to make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

Manning was able to get what he wanted. Friday, he has agreed to a five-year deal for 90 million dollars (18 million dollars a year), which is equal to what New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is currently making, according to ESPN.

Manning was noted that he had told Irsay a five-year, 100 million dollar proposal that was planned to be done for his re-sign was not necessary, which would have given him a 20 million dollar average that no NFL player has ever attained. The reason being was that Manning wanted the Colts to keep extra money so that they could have cap room space for their players.

Peyton Manning was quoted as saying in the Indianapolis Star, “While I appreciate Jim Irsay offering to make me the highest-paid player. I told him I’d rather he save that money and keep whoever it is … (running back) Joe Addai, (left tackle) Charlie Johnson … whoever that may be. I’m willing to take less than they’ve offered if they are going to take that money to keep players we need to keep and go get other players. All I want is for them to have the cap and the cash to keep the players they want to keep and to sign other players.”

Colts’ owner Irsay made his own comment; “Signing Peyton was a top priority for this organization and we are thrilled that the deal is complete. We feel that it is a salary cap friendly deal and it allows us more flexibility.”

As for the Manning injury, team neurosurgeon Dr. Hank Feuer stated “There is every medical indication that he is progressing steadily. While he looks fine, he still has some rehabilitation to go. Recovery from disc surgery is unpredictable and it is not a medical concern that he is not ready at this time.”

There should be no concern for whether or not Peyton will be ready to play. His Iron-man persona is given to him for a reason. Peyton has never missed a game since his first year at the University of Tennessee, so there should be no worries for the former Super-Bowl and Pro-Bowl Quarterback.

MLB: Hunter Pence Now With Philadelphia Phillies Sun, 31 Jul 2011 12:39:24 +0000 This week in both the NFL and the MLB, the Philadelphia teams have made some incredible transactions.

The Phillies made its deadline trade Friday night, getting Pence from the Astros.

The National League East-leading Phillies got the right-fielder from Houston in exchange for three minor league prospects and a player to be named, deepening up their lineup as they try to make it back again to the World Series for the third time in the last four years. The Astros sent, with the All-Star, to the Phillies $2 million to help pay the $2.2 million left on Pence’s salary for the rest of the year, according to ESPN.

This trade could not have come for a more opportune time for Philadelphia. The NL East leader, in my opinion at least, just solidified their playoff birth with this trade. Already having massive stars such as Ryan Howard, Roy Halliday, Cliff Lee, and Cole Hamels, the Phillies look ready to make another deep playoff run.

For Pence, the trade is absolutely fantastic. Instead of being forced to be “the guy” day in and day out for Houston, he can take a lessened role, and be able to concentrate more on developing his skills as a player.

For Houston, while they did receive several future prospects, this is a terrible trade. I can never condone trading off your star player, EVER. I mean, he was the reason Houston fans were going to games, not the fact that they’re last in the league in wins. I understand the importance to develop your franchise for the long run, but this looks to be too good for the Phillies, and a big loss for the Astros.

MLB: Carlos Beltran Traded to the Giants Sun, 31 Jul 2011 02:45:45 +0000 The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants finalized a trade Thursday to acquire the Carlos Beltran and cash from the New York Mets, upgrading their fluctuating offense. Beltran first had to approve the deal to the Giants.

New York’s requisition in the swap is the Giant’s pitching prospect Zachary Wheeler, who is 7-5 with a 3.99 ERA in 16 starts for San Francisco’s high Class-A affiliate in San Jose. The Giants selected Wheeler with the No. 6 pick in the 2009 draft.

The 34-year-old Beltran leads the National League with 30 doubles and is batting .289 with 15 homers and 66 RBIs.

The Giants’ general manager Brian Sabean was quoted on the the trade “When you’re defending world champions, you do have to try to defend that title any way you can… We’re in first place. Hopefully we show we mean business. … Simply put, we’re thrilled with bringing Carlos on board. We really felt the organization needed a shot in the arm and more so our lineup.” Sabean stated.

The Giants are currently batting .241 with 66 homers and 373 runs scored, all of these numbers rank near the bottom of the National League this season. No Giants player on the roster has more than nine home runs. The closest player to Beltran in RBIs is Aubrey Huff with 47 RBIs.

With the way that the Giants’ bats have been this season, it is safe to assume that Beltran will be an immediate upgrade to this inconsistent offense. With the loss of Buster Posey this season, Carlos Beltran will be a great addition to this offense, and could even lead the Giants back to the promised land that is the World Series.
