The SmarK Starrcade Countdown (Supplemental): The Best of Starrcade 83-87

The SmarK Retro Rant for the Best of Starrcade 83-87. LET'S GET OLD SCHOOL! This was a tape put out by Crockett in early 88 to celebrate five years of Starrcade, and it's an unheard-of two tape, four-hour collection of uncut matches from 83-87, and the matchlist shows some truly amazing foresight on the part of the people making the selections. It was in pretty good supply up until a few years ago, too, with most Blockbusters carrying it. And PLEASE don't e-mail me asking if you can get a copy from me, because it'll go straight to the recycle bin. Try your local video store or ask at the Death Valley Driver board ( because I'm sure someone there would be more than happy to get you a copy. - Your host is Magnum TA »»

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1999

The Netcop Rant for Starrcade 1999

- There was a really good episode of WCW Saturday Night this week, featuring a couple of young guys in a good match for the point they’re at, along with a rockin’ little match between Chris Adams and Dean Malenko, and Kanyon was there, and Devon Storm and Booker T ripped it up. The point? No matter how badly the Powers That Be try to kill the wrestling, the good will always catch up. So let’s see how they can screw this one up.

(2011 Scott sez:  I don’t even REMEMBER this show outside of Bret v. Goldberg, so this will be an adventure for me, too…)

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1998 (Version 2)

The SmarK 24/7 Rant for WCW Starrcade 98 - Has it really been 9 years since this atrocity? Oddly enough, I haven't watched it since the original rant, so needless to say this one's overdue for a redo. And that's what WWE 24/7 is for!  (2011 Sco »»

· Okay, this is what we call a “Concept Show.” The concept in this case is that Sonny Onoo and his group of baddies from New Japan Pro Wrestling are “invading” WCW and the result is a 7 match series to determine the “World Cup of Wrestling.” Neat idea in theory, stupid idea in practice, especially on the biggest show of the year. This predated the nWo by 7 months, it should be noted.

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1994

The Netcop Retro Rant for Starrcade 94

- Welcome to rock bottom, as Hogan’s egomania results in the main event of the biggest WCW show of the year involving Brutus Beefcake. To put things in perspective, this was during my WCW boycott period, and I didn’t even read the results of the show until about a month after, and I didn’t see the show for the first time until 1997. I think I still watched Worldwide wrestling back around this time, because I recall seeing a lot of Larry Zbyszko v. Terra Rizin’ matches. Hey, remember when WCW actually developed future World champions instead of signing them 10 years past their prime? Bets are currently flying as to who the next dumbass talent release will end up being. I personally say Lenny Lane, with the whole West Hollywood Blond thing being the spark that ignites his star in the WWF when the inevitable signing occurs once his contract expires.  (2011 Scott sez:  I believe Lenny Lane is now doing kids birthday parties for a living.  So I was bit off on my assessment of his future potential.)

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1992

The Netcop Retro Rant for Starrcade 92, which is the 10th annual Starrcade 92, according to the voiceover guy at the beginning. Yup, I remember the first Starrcade 92, back in 1983...

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1989

The Netcop Retro Rant for Starrcade 89

- I just want to start off by addressing the whole “How can Russo/Ferrera steal from themselves” debate that my Thunder report seems to have triggered. Two words: John Fogerty. He was the sole creative force behind Creedence Clearwater Revival, so much so that when he recorded a solo album in the 80s, CCR’s money-grubbing former record label actually sued him because that album sounded like a CCR album and was thus “self-plagiarism”. And they almost WON that lawsuit, too. Fogerty stuck it out and fought it, costing both sides millions, and eventually won the case. Was it silly and trivial to sue over it? Of course. But in the entertainment world, stupid stuff like that happens EVERY DAY, and Russo & Ferrera would be well-advised to remember that the WWF was more than happy to sue WCW over “intellectual property” on weaker grounds than what they’d have if they pressed a lawsuit tomorrow over, say, Buzzkill. What is right and fair and logical seldom applies in the wrestling world, legal world, or any other place these days. I’m just saying that if the WWF sues because Russo has writer’s block to go along with his million-dollar contract, don’t say I didn’t warn you.  (2011 Scott sez:  As it turns out, the whole thing was a moot point because Russo got fired anyway.  And John Fogerty did eventually reconcile with Fantasy Records and released a solo/CCR greatest hits CD that’s pretty awesome.  So happy endings for everyone!)

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1987

(2011 Scott sez:  Right away be warned, this is an OLD review and I’m not particularly fond of my writing style at this point.)

The SmarK Starrcade Countdown: 1986

I know you’re thinking “What the fuck are you counting down to?” but don’t confuse me with details.  I kind of felt like doing the 2011 Scott Sez treatment for Starrcade through December, so it’s a countdown, OK?  Better that than a month of crappy WWE December PPVs.
