More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - Snapshot

As far as I can piece together, I made this mixtape specifically because I was going up to Lafayette for my Spring Break '98 (it was great having cousins in PA when I was in MD). I'm pretty sure I made it for the long bus ride. Anyway, it's a dope little snapshot into me from 11 years ago. ... »»

Excerpts from This Morning's Alphabits: Kweli 31

Brenda, Larry, a firefly eating a marshmallow, the Death of Auto-Tune, MJ, McNair, Michael Bay's racism, mannequins, time travel and Talib Kweli... I've had a lot going on lately. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - Hip Hop's Art Garfunkel

I'll never forget it; it was late August 2001. That's when I became a committed fan of Roc-A-Fella Records, right after hearing the bootleg of The Blueprint. The beats sounded like the evolution of the sound that was introduced on Jay-Z's previous album The Dynasty: Roc La Familia—it was a soulful throwback, sample-heavy yet modern. And it sounded like nothing else. Flash-forward eight years... Kanye West, one of the architects of that sound, is a huge star. Just Blaze is the Art Garfunkel to West's Paul Simon and it's a shame because the guy is just as talented behind the boards. »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - At Last!

So, this week I received a couple of packages from Tucson. They were full of CDs. I was slayed, mostly because it brings me to having about 98 or 99 percent of my collection with me in Baltimore. But I was also slayed because, as a result of this bloody recession, I've yet to purchase a single CD this year. Seriously, I've never been happier to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers' double album (which plays more like a quadruple album), Stadium Arcadium. That's how starved I've been for this music. It's depressing but as much as I love music, it's the most expendable part of my monthly budget. I mean, I need to eat. I've got to get to work. I need to pay rent and BG&E. Plus I've got a cell phone and a mean comic-book habit. »»

Excerpts from This Morning's Alphabits: Looking Forward

I love Common. I think it's remarkable how far he's come commercially (finally), given the talent that he possesses. But for every person that lifted a quizzical eyebrow at his Electric Circus album attempt, please note that the techno, experimental, otherworldly sound that so many artists are embracing today... »»

Wanted (2-Disc Special Edition) - DVD Review

It's one thing to be able to craft a massive hit or two in your home country for a foreign director. It's another to be able to go into another country's system and craft a monster hit. That's exactly what Timur Bekmambetov, of post-Communist Russia's Night Watch franchise, did with Wanted this summer. »»

MGF Reviews Saul Williams - The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust!

There will be people out there that will call this album "Halo 27.5", and really, there's nothing wrong with that. After all, Common's Like Water for Chocolate, like it or not, was essentially a Roots album but still one of the best to come out in 2000. Yes, Saul Williams is an immensely talented writer and musician whose work is about as thought-provoking as anything released by Public Enemy or Rage Against the Machine in their respective heydays. ... »»

OK, so last time I gave you a rundown of the albums that Entertainment Weekly had deemed "The New Classics." I even provided their ranking. Now, it's time for me to gripe about who I think was snubbed, in terms of hip-hop. »»
