More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks: R.I.P. Little Brother

Sure those first two albums (The Listening and The Minstrel Show) were impressive documents that stood in contrast to the era in which they were produced. They were albums that weren’t glossy and had themes that weren’t related to materialism. They offered up commentary about both on hip-hop and overall culture as well. ... »»

Excerpts from This Mornings Alphabits: Drake Drizzle

I went from criticizing Wayne cuz of his whiny, gargling, Auto-Tuned voice being everywhere and then was introduced to his Halloween mixtape last year and was turned around. Not so much as to say that he is one of my top 10 or anything, but I definitely have more respect for him than I previously did. Think what you will. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks: Writer's Block

I sort of feel sad for 50 Cent and his precipitous fall from relevancy. His new album, Before I Self Destruct, isn’t doing too well. In fact, given his history the new album is a downright flop. And despite the fact that I feel he’s a clown with few redeeming qualities, I still feel bad for the guy. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks: Best WORST I Ever Heard

Through a convoluted series of events, I picked up Drake's debut EP, So Far Gone, this week, and I've finally made my mind up about the guy. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Of the Moment

I love Jay-Z, and "D.O.A." is a dope song (with a sick beat), but he seems to be coming off as a bit of a grumpy old man. He's bordering on a "back in my day" mentality. He's singing the same song that Nas did on Hip-Hop Is Dead. ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - Fans

I'll admit that I can, at times, be a hater. I really enjoyed Family Guy when it made its debut, but by the time it returned to Fox after getting cancelled, I couldn't bring myself to watch it because of how obnoxious its fans were. It was like the show was appealing to the most common denominator, and I wanted no part of it. So to some degree, the more popular something is, the less likely I am to be a fan of it, because fans turn me off to something quicker than anything else. And that's why I'll probably never be able to get into either MF Doom or Lil Wayne, which is odd because their fans are on opposite ends of the hip-hop spectrum. »»

Saving Abel guitarist and co-founder Jason Null has been charged for committing an illegal sex act at a concert in Oakland on Tuesday, after allegedly forcing a 17-year-old girl to perform oral sex on him while inside the band's tour bus. Also named as a defendant was Brandon Danger, a guitar stringer for the band, who is alleged to have picked the girl out of the crowd after the band had finished their set, and who may or may not have taken part in the actual offense as well. »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks – Leaf it Alone

Apparently not happy with just fouling up the hip-hop genre, Lil Wayne has set his sights on making crap music in another genre as well, as he's reportedly creating a "rock" album. And you'll never guess who is blame for all of this. Nope, not Lil Jon, believe it or not... »»

In what seemed like at the very least a meager attempt at some humility, Diddy announced earlier in the month that he felt bad for fans affected by the economic recession, and pledged to stop wearing ridiculously expensive jewelry and clothing until the economy has recovered. But now it seems as if one of the world's richest mouth-breathers has either decided to renege on his decision... »»

Just on the heels of receiving seven Grammy nominations (second only to Lil Wayne, with eight, who is still an overrated piece of shit), Coldplay has been slapped with a lawsuit by guitarist Joe Satriani, who accuses the band of plagiarism of one of his original compositions. According to the copyright infringement suit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles, Coldplay's massive 2008 hit, "Viva la Vida" (from the album of the same, and is nominated for both Record and Song of the Year) contains "substantial original portions" from "If I Could Fly" (from Satriani's 2004 album, Is There Love in Space?). In the album's liner notes, the track is credited to the four band members, with no mention of Satriani or his song. »»

MGF Reviews Enigma - Seven Lives Many Faces

A lot of the material really sounds like a lot of the material from albums past, with the exception of a handful of tracks, but still, fans of this genre will no doubt enjoy it, while other people will probably not mind the tracks when they no doubt appear in various luxury car commercials in the future. Oh, wait a minute... Moby released a new album recently, too, didn't he? ... »»

More Reasons Why Being Deaf Sucks/Rocks - A Mix for ME

One of my favorite things about coworkers is the sharing of music. In fact, given my misanthropic tendencies I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's the only thing I like about coworkers. ... During my time in the "702," I had coworkers who tried to sell me on U2 and Lil Wayne with a single mix offered to me by my closest friend out there. U2 and Lil Wayne. Does my move back to Baltimore make any more sense now? ... »»

MGF Reviews UB40 - Greatest Hits

UB40 - Greatest Hits Virgin / EMI (9/30/08) Reggae / Pop Is UB40 essentially a cover band? It's kind of difficult to deny when more than half of the tracks on this Greatest Hits compilation are revamped from someone else's catalogue. Probably close to ninety percent of the population knows UB40 for one of their cover songs, which have always been their biggest hits. From Motown to rock to old-school reggae, the band has shown time and time again that they can craft a new, reggae-laden hit out of an older classic. But it wasn't always that way. In 1980, the lads from Birmingham, England, released their debut album, Signing Off, on Graduate Records. Hitting the record stores just as the 2 Tone sound (spearheaded by bands like The Specials, Madness and The Selecter) was starting to taper off, UB40's (band name taken from a British government-issued unemployment form) sound had a darker tone, much truer to the rich, murky dub sound (complete with reverb-a-plenty), with socially and politically adroit lyrics (one of the album's biggest hits was the MLK Jr. tribute, "King"). "One in Ten", which appeared on the band's subsequent album, 1981's Present Arms, was a scathing attack on the overly ideological views of then-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and it's unfortunately the only representative of the band's earlier, doom-laden, dub-rich sound. This stuff is so good that it could have been released on Trojan Records. »»

After subjecting his fans to what has been an album-release gap that is beginning to rival that of the still-upcoming Guns N' Roses album, rapper/producer Dr. Dre has announced that he's finally done tinkering with his first new album in almost a decade, and will be ready to release it by the end of the year. Dre started working on Detox (as it's reportedly still going to be titled) back in 2004, though after several studio sessions, he decided to temporarily shelf it in order to focus more on producing material for other artists, including Eminem, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes and The Game. The album's release was intended to be delayed only until the end of 2005, but that's when the shenanigans began... »»

MGF Reviews Rick Ross - Trilla

When it comes to Miami-based drug n' thug rapper Rick Ross, it's all too easy to dismiss him. He's from the South, so that's strike one. His stage name is yet another tired tribute to an infamous real-life ne'er-do-well for strike two. And, he's assembled a shockingly awesome cast of guest artists and producers for his sophomore effort. What the hell? ... »»

Excerpts from This Morning's Alphabits: Kneed for Music

Well, party people, I'm getting old. A few weekends ago I found myself writhing in pain due to an inflamed knee that I had aggravated while playing basketball. And it's been a tough few months for me—I've found myself being angry, sad and frustrated and the only thing that seems to move me along out of my somber moods is music. Part of my frustration comes from not being able to play basketball the way I want to. Stupid aging... Anyway, family crises have also been the cause of my melancholy but music still makes it through to my core and settles me somewhat. For that, I stay thankful. In the meantime, there are two things I'd like to discuss: why in my absence from this column I cannot seem to escape the bubbly digital voice of performers on the radio (Lil Wayne, Akon, Wyclef, Chris Brown, the infamous T-Pain, The Dream, Rihanna, Madonna and others). In fact, the number of people and songs that have that voice effect has grown exponentially. »»
