Don’t expect CSI: NY, Golden Boy, Made in Jersey, Partners, Rules of Engagement or Vegas to be on CBS, though, because they have ALL been cancelled!

Father Dowling (Happy Days‘ Tom Bosley) is a Catholic priest in Chicago who likes a good murder mystery as much as his beloved Cubs. His desire to solve crimes is almost matched by the street-wise Sister Stephanie ‘Steve’ Oskowski (Square Pegs‘ Tracy Nelson). Who holds down the church while Father Dowling is scooping the cops? Father Philip Prestwick (Paper Chase‘s James Stephens) is eager to pick up the slack. Although it seems that Marie (Sister Act‘s Mary Wickes) really makes sure things don’t go to hell between the preoccupied priests and nun.

“The Royal Mystery” keeps things from being merely congregation crimes. Turns out that Sister Sam is a dead ringer for a visiting royal family member that someone wants dead. She switches identity with the noble woman so Father Dowling can smoke out the assassin. David McCallum (NCIS) migt be a suspect. “The Medical Mystery” has an angel of death at the local hospital. Father Dowling must keep Father Prestwick alive after his surgery. “The Showgirl Mystery” isn’t that naughty. Turns out one of Sister Sam’s friends is about to marry her longtime boyfriend. He’s a rich guy and she’s an entertainer. But on her wedding day, the guy dies. She knows something is wrong since their safety deposit box has been raided.

“The Movie Mystery” makes the church the location for a major motion picture. But there’s trouble not in the script. Father Dowling must save the film by finding the evil that came from Hollywood. “The Undercover Nun Mystery” kills a nun at the convent. Amongst the Nun-icide suspects is Colm Meany (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and John Vernon (Animal House). “The Murder Mystery Weekend” is once more a party about a fake death turn into a real killing. Father Dowling must track down the host’s killer. “The Christmas Mystery” brings the holidays to the church. But instead of lighting the Advent candles, Father Dowling searches for someone that wants to kill a widow. The big suspect turns out to be Santa Claus.

“The Fugitive Priest Mystery” brings back Father Dowling’s twin brother (also Tom Bosley). He claims to have gone straight, but is it part of a big con? Michelle Forbes (Battlestar Galactica) plays a gym instructor. “The Prodigal Son Mystery” gets an earful in the confessional from John Rubinstein (Family). When John gets busted for killing his mistress, Dowling can’t sit back. Kate Vernon (John Vernon’s daughter and star of Battlestar Galactica) gets tangled in the “Hail Marys.” “The Moving Target Mystery” has a hitman fear that he’s got a target on his back. “The Priest Killer Mystery” puts Father Dowling on a Serial Killer’s list. Can he save himself with the help of Sister Sam posing as a cabbie? John Astin (The Addams Family) could be out to snuff Dowling. “The Mummy’s Curse Mystery” gets blessed by a visit from David Hemmings (Blow-Up). “The Hardboiled Mystery” places the clue to a murder inside a mystery novel. “The Consulting Detective Mystery” makes Dowling doubt his sleuth skills when he gets an innocent man busted. Timothy Stack (Son of the Beach) and Kurt Fuller (Wayne’s World) are part of this lack of faith. “The Joyful Noise Mystery” makes Ivan Dixon (Hogan’s Heroes) a man of the cloth. Dowling gets tangled in politics, jazz and ultimately murder. This was Ivan Dixon’s last acting gig in TV.

Father Dowling Mysteries: The Final Season is a bit of a shocker simply cause the show felt like it was on as long as Matlock. The lack of episodes does explain why on the nostalgia channels, they don’t team up the Chicago priest with the best lawyer in Atlanta. Father Dowling Mysteries did appear over the course of 5 years, but made as many episodes as an HBO series. Poor Father Dowling could survive Satan, killers and an evil twin brother, but he couldn’t handle Bill Cosby and Bart Simpson.

The video is 1.33:1 full frame. The series was made during that time when they shot on 35mm, but did all the editing off a standard definition video. It’s a little fuzzy on the resolution. The audio is Dolby Digital Stereo. The mix gives Tom Bosley that priestly tone as he cracks a case. The episodes are subtitled.

Father Dowling Mysteries: The Final Season brings to a close a series that should have lasted as long as Matlock if not for the evil work of Bart Simpson. This is a charming mystery series that should have had more episodes over all those years.

The second round voting has ended and there were a TON of upsets! Even one of the #1 seeds went down this round. So lets see who is moving on to the next round!

The ABC Region lost three of its top seeds. The biggest was the #2 seed Finn and Rachel from Glee losing to Neal and Peter from White Collar. The #5 seed Adam and Kristina Braverman from Parenthood got blown out by Dean and Sam from Supernatural. Jax and Tara from Sons of Anarchy, the #6 seed, also got eliminated by Hank and Nick from Grimm. The majority of the winners from this region won by at least 60%. The closest matchup was the #8 seed, the girls from Pretty Little Liars, edging out the duo from NCIS: LA. There are only three seeds left here.

The FOX region also lost three of its top seeds. The #4 seed Cam and Mitchell from Modern Family lost to another comedy couple, Lily and Marshall from How I Met Your Mother. The #6 seed Cersei Lannister and Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones were no match for David and Brian from New Normal. In the closest matchup from this round, the #7 seed Matthew and Mary from Downton Abbey lost by only 2 votes to Peter and Olivia from Fringe. There are five seeds left in this region, and most of them are near the top, so this region is definitely the one that has went down mostly as expected.

The CBS region only lost two top seeds this round, but this region saw most of its top seeds get eliminated in the first two rounds. The biggest elimination in this round was the #2 seed, the love quad from True Blood, losing by just 20 votes to Shawn and Gus from Psych. The biggest blow out was actually the #6 seed Brody and Carrie from Homeland getting destroyed by Kurt and Blaine from Glee, who won with 89% of the vote. In fact the majority of the winners in this region won by at least 80% of the vote including Brennan/Booth from Bones, Prince Charming/Snow White from Once Upon a Time, Catherine/Vincent from Beauty and the Beast, and Barney and Robin from How I Met Your Mother.

Finally, the NBC region was “Upset Central”. When we started the second round, all 8 top seeds were still alive. As we enter the third round, there are only 2 top seeds left! The biggest upset was the #1 seed Tony and Ziva from NCIS losing to Sheldon and Amy from The Big Bang Theory. The other Big Bang Theory couple, the #4 seed Penny and Leonard, lost by 14 votes to Santanna and Brittany from Glee. Also losing this round were the #3 seed Daniel and Emily from Revenge, #5 seed Rick and Carl Grimes from The Walking Dead, #6 seed Bobby and J.R. Ewing from Dallas, and #7 seed Don Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men. They each lost by a fairly wide margin, but no winner had more than 68% of the vote, so no big blowouts here. However, only the #2 seed and #8 seed remain in this region.

We started with 32 top seeds and we are now down to only 13. In fact there are only two match ups this round that feature two seeds facing off, and they are both #1 vs. #8 seed match ups. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some exciting battles this round. There are plenty of “upset” couples facing off against each other now. Some of them have to keep their “Cinderella” runs going.

The first round voting has ended and 5 of the 32 top seeds went down. Two of them I would call MAJOR upsets. Lots of competition elsewhere with everything from blowouts to one matchup coming down to a single vote. Lets break down the first round action.

The ABC Region featured 2 upsets. The biggest one was the #4 seed, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, losing to Arrow and Laurel from Arrow! The margin of victory was only 57% to 43%, but somehow a couple from a new CW show defeated a couple from a multi-time Emmy award winning cable show. The next upset was the #7 seed, Nucky Thompson and Margaret Schroeder from Boardwalk Empire, losing to Melissa Burke and Joe Longo from Melissa & Joey. The margin of victory for this matchup was not even close, 70% to 30%. Obviously, this was a case of a cable show having a larger following than a premium HBO show, at least for this tournament. The biggest margin of victories from this region were the #1 seed, Richard Castle and Kate Beckett from Castle, and Dean and Sam from Supernatural. These couples each won by over 80%. The girls from Pretty Little Liars only defeated the NCIS: LA duo by 20 votes in the closet matchup from this region.

The FOX Region went pretty much as expected. The top 8 seeds all moved on to the next round. In fact, most of the winners from this region won fairly easily with at least 70% of the vote. The biggest blowout was Lily and Marshall from How I Met Your Mother winning by 91% over the Switched at Birth couple. The closest matchup was a small surprise as the longest running couple in the entire tournament, Homer and Marge Simpson only won by 14 votes over The Mentalist couple.

The CBS region has been completely blown up already! Three of the top 8 seeds from this region lost in the first round. The biggest upset had to be the Beauty and the Beast couple defeated the #4 seed, Phil and Claire Dunphy from Modern Family! The fact that they won by a wide margin was definitely surprising. Also losing were the #8 seed, Michael and Fiona from Burn Notice, and the #5 seed, the guys from Two and a Half Men. The biggest blowout was the #1 seed, Brennan and Booth from Bones, who easily defeated the couple from Army Wives by 94%. The closest win was Riley and Evan Parks from The Client List winning by just 17 votes over Hank and Evan R. Lawson from Royal Pains.

The NBC Region also went as you would have predicted. The top seeds all won here. Most of the match ups were complete blowouts with the #2 seed, Jess and Nick from New Girl, winning by the biggest margin of 92%. But there were 2 VERY close match ups in this region. The #7 seed, Don Draper and Peggy Olson from Mad Men, beat June and Chloe from Don’t Trust the B by 12 votes. Then, there was the battle between Andy and Sam from Rookie Blue and Fitz and Olivia from Scandal. It went back and forth, but in the end 1 vote decided the winner with Andy and Sam pulling out the victory.

It certainly was an interesting first round with some surprising upsets. But now the second round voting has begun. We have 64 couple left, so go vote and remember to tell everyone you know to vote too!

It’s that time again! It’s the month of March and it’s time once again for the annual Inside Pulse TV Tournament! The biggest and most talked about tournament during “March Madness” season is still the NCAA Basketball championship tournament, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any room for other tournaments out there. More importantly, there will always be room and time in your life to fill out more brackets that everyone loves. Do you really have anything else better to do today? I doubt it.

Everyone loves brackets and television. We proved that the last three years when we got hundreds of thousands of votes each weeks in our “Best Show on Television Tournament” in 2010 and 2012, and “Best Television Character Tournament” in 2011. Back in 2010, Chuck was the ultimate winner over Burn Notice. In 2012, The Walking Dead ended up walking over Modern Family for the Best TV Show crown. In 2011, Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory barely defeated Barson Stinson from How I Met Your Mother to win the first TV character tournament. This year we are changing things up a little bit.

No one successful television show has lived on star power alone. There might have been one name that stuck when a show first started, but if a show is going to survive more than one season, it has to have an ensemble of actors and characters. Every great show has had that in common. More importantly, there is usually a “couple” or a team of characters that are the heart of every show. Without these characters, the show wouldn’t work. So this year we are going to crown the “Best Television Show Couple”! 

When you think of television couples, you usually think of a great romantic couple. Most shows have a couple of characters that start out as friends or just acquaintances, and they tease viewers with the “will they or won’t they” storyline. As in will they get together or not. But there have been other great “couples” that have been just friends or simple related to each other in one way or another. In fact, you could have hated enemies that would be considered a “great couple”. So in this tournament, you will find all kinds of couples, from romantic couples to family members, just friends and even hated enemies. There are even a pair of identical twins.

It should be noted how these characters were able to qualify for this tournament. First, the show that these characters were on had to have an aired a new episode since June 2012. Characters from shows that aired new episodes earlier in 2012 would only be eligible, if there were going have new episodes earlier in 2013. So some cable and premium channel shows that finished a season before June 2012, but were coming back this year with new episodes, would be eligible. So basically to qualify for this tournament, characters must be from a TV show that has aired a new episode since June 2012, and is either airing right now or will air new episodes later this year.

Now here is how the qualifying characters were selected. First, I looked at all of the shows that were eligible and came up with one or more “couples” that make that show work. It should be noted that in some cases I couldn’t single out just 2 people. So from certain shows there will be 3 or 4 people grouped together. I felt the relationship between those people were what made the show. So before you ask, in this tournament a “couple” can mean more than 2 people. But for the most part, it is just two people. I narrowed down the list of couples to 128. Yes, that is a lot, but there are a lot of shows on TV and a lot of couples out there. I eventually picked out the top 32 couples. Those couples were the ONLY ones to actually be seeded. They each get one of the top 8 seeds in the 4 different regions. The other couples were basically placed in the bracket in random order. Some couples had more “weight” than others, but depending on how you look at it, there might be few upsets in this tournament. The only time you could truly call it an upset is if one of the top 32 seeds loses in the early rounds of the tournament.

A few more things before we get to the bracket. Just like the real NCAA Tournament, there were some couples from automatic qualifying shows. They might have been in lesser conferences i.e. networks, but they each won their network tournament to earn a spot in the championship tournament. So you will see a few shows from each of the “lesser” cable networks with a few more from the “upper” cable and premium networks. But the majority of shows come from ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS, and THE CW. Even with 128 couples, I’m sure there are still some of your favorites that didn’t make it into the field. But the majority of your favorites should be there. It’s that time again! It’s the month of March and it’s time once again for the annual Inside Pulse TV Tournament! The biggest and most talked about tournament during “March Madness” season is still the NCAA Basketball championship tournament, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any room for other tournaments out there. More importantly, there will always be room and time in your life to fill out more brackets that everyone loves. Do you really have anything else better to do today? I doubt it.

Everyone loves brackets and television. We proved that the last three years when we got hundreds of thousands of votes every week in our “Best Show on Television Tournament” in 2010 and 2012, and “Best Television Character Tournament” in 2011. Back in 2010, Chuck was the ultimate winner over Burn Notice. In 2012, The Walking Dead ended up walking over Modern Family for the Best TV Show crown. In 2011, Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory barely defeated Barson Stinson from How I Met Your Mother to win the first TV character tournament. This year we are changing things up a little bit.

Not one successful television show has lived on star power alone. There might have been one name that stuck when a show first started, but if a show is going to survive more than one season, it has to have an ensemble of actors and characters. Every great show has had that in common. More importantly, there is usually a “couple” or a team of characters that are the heart of every show. Without these characters, the show wouldn’t be the same. So this year we are going to crown the “Best Television Show Couple”!

When you think of television couples, you usually think of a great romantic couple. Most shows have a couple of characters that start out as friends or just acquaintances, and they tease viewers with the “will they or won’t they” storyline. As in will they get together or not. But there have been other great “couples” that have been just friends or simple related to each other in one way or another. In fact, you could have hated enemies that would be considered a “great couple”. So in this tournament, you will find all kinds of couples, from romantic couples to family members, just friends and even hated enemies. There are even a pair of identical twins.

It should be noted how these characters were able to qualify for this tournament. First, the show that these characters were on had to have aired a new episode since June 2012. Characters from shows that aired new episodes earlier in 2012 would only be eligible, if that show was going have new episodes in 2013. So some cable and premium channel shows that finished a season before June 2012, but were coming back this year with new episodes, would be eligible. So basically to qualify for this tournament, characters must be from a TV show that has aired a new episode since June 2012, and is either airing right now or will air new episodes later this year.

Now here is how the qualifying characters were selected. First, we looked at all of the shows that were eligible and came up with one or more “couples” that make that show work. It should be noted that in some cases we couldn’t single out just 2 people. So from certain shows there will be 3 or 4 characters grouped together. We felt the relationship between those people were what made the show. So before you ask, in this tournament a “couple” can mean more than 2 people. That means is room in this tournament for “love triangles” and even “love quads” that haven’t been resolved yet. But for the most part, it is just two people. We finally narrowed down the list of couples to 128. Yes, that is a lot, but there are a lot of shows on TV and a lot of couples out there. We eventually picked out the top 32 couples. Those couples were the ONLY ones to actually be seeded. They each get one of the top 8 seeds in the 4 different regions. The other couples were basically placed in the bracket in random order. Some couples had more “weight” than others, but depending on how you look at it, there might be few upsets in this tournament. The only time you could truly call it an upset is if one of the top 32 seeds loses in the early rounds of the tournament.

A few more things before we get to the bracket. Just like the real NCAA Tournament, there were some couples from automatic qualifying shows. They might have been in lesser conferences i.e. networks, but they each won their network tournament to earn a spot in the championship tournament. So you will see a few shows from each of the “lesser” cable networks with a few more from the “upper” cable and premium networks. But the majority of shows come from ABC, FOX, NBC, and CBS. Even with 128 couples, I’m sure there are still some of your favorites that didn’t make it into the field. But the majority of your favorites should be there. “The Case of the Ice-Cold Hands” starts off with Joyce Bulifant (Match Game) hiring Perry to hold onto her race track tickets on a long shot. He’s paid to go down to the track if there’s any winnings. The horse wins and Perry goes to the track to collect the fat pot. But a guy at the track claims Joyce’s brother stole the money to make the bets. Later on that guy turns up dead and Joyce now has to hire Perry Mason defend her from murder charges. Don’t people understand that no matter what you hire Mason to do, it’ll eventually flip into a homicide defense? “The Case of the Bountiful Beauty” turns a woman into a best selling novelist thanks to basing a character on her boyfriend’s stepmom. Turns out the stepmom doesn’t appreciate it and wants to sue for libel. Before that case can happen, the stepmom turns up dead and the novelist is the prime suspect. Ryan O’Neal (Barry Lyndon) turns up the boyfriend trapped in the middle.

“The Case of the Nervous Neighbor” is another tale of mom and murder. This time a guy wants to find his missing mom. Paul Drake (William Hopper) finds her, but there’s a complication. The woman swears she’s got amnesia and her husband’s dead. Now the guy has to hire Perry Mason to defend mom. Shame he didn’t use a Groupon. Francis X. Bushman (The Ghost In the Invisible Bikini) has a small role. “The Case of the Fifty Millionth Frenchman” reminds us why it’s bad to give cash to an old lover. In this case, the lover’s husband dies and the loaner becomes the suspect. David McCallum (NCIS) and Jackie Coogan (The Addams Family) get wrapped in the French twist. “The Case of the Arrogant Arsonist” makes the fire chief a suspect in drumming up business. “The Case of the Garrulous Go-Between” warns of fortune telling neighbors with parrots.

“The Case of the Woeful Widower” makes a woman fear her boss is plotting to kill his wife. The boss swears she’s stealing from him. Jerry Van Dyke (Coach) might be evil. “The Case of the Simple Simon” brings Victor Buono (Batman‘s King Tut) onto the case. There’s murder at a touring Shakespeare company. A man thinks he’s seen his dead wife in “The Case of the Antic Angel.” It isn’t her, but the woman turns up dead. He turns up at the defense table with Perry Mason as his lawyer. “The Case of the Careless Kidnapper” has a faked kidnapping turn into a real homicide. Perry has to sort out this prank gone extremely bad. “The Case of the Drifting Dropout” turns a homicide case into counterfeiting and blackmail. Neil Hamilton (Batman‘s Commissioner Gordon) is part of the mutating felonies. “The Case of the Ugly Duckling” puts a rich heiress in the position that if she doesn’t get married, the family business must be sold. Her prime suitor has a dark secret that comes out at the crime scene.

Perry Mason: Season 7, Volume 2 keeps up the goodness as even the simplest of legal procedures turn into homicides. This keeps the action hopping since you’re not quite sure who is going to die at the start of the episodes. Raymond Burr has become so masterful in the role of Mason that you’d almost think about using his techniques in small claims court. His flirting with secretary Della Street (Barbara Hale) has cooled off during their office time. Even though this is an hour long, black and white legal thriller that keeps delivering after 57 years. Perry Mason can still hold an audience even when you know the guilty party in the courtroom.

TORONTO – It’s safe to say Shaw Media’s upfront presentation was shocking and just like when you go to see a movie that you are unsure about and it ends up surprising you, Global’s upfront might end up being the most noteworthy of them all this week.

After Rogers rolled out Katie Couric, Max Greenfield, Dominic Monaghan and new Bachelor Canada host Tyler Harcott in support of their new Fall lineup on Tuesday, Global stayed quiet about who they would be bringing prior to their presentation. This led to increased speculation about who was coming to mingle with ad executives.

Was it going to be Jeff Probst? The Survivor host will preside over the 25th season of the show later this year and will also launch his new daytime talk show on Global in the Fall. Alas, it couldn’t be him as he is currently filming the 26th season of the show in the Philippines.

Could it be Lucy Liu from Elementary? There was buzz that this was one of the shows that Barb Williams had picked up in LA and the former Ally McBeal star would be a good choice to schmooze with the crowd.

Was Donald Trump in Toronto? Maybe he would be there to shill for The Celebrity Apprentice considering the press junket was taking place at the Trump International Hotel & Tower. Hmm.

Of course, there’s the age-old adage Global mandate of just bringing somebody from Glee as Matthew Morrison, Iqbal Theba and Dot Jones have all been here in the past, but they really couldn’t do that again, could they?

Ricki Lake

In the end, Global’s talent ended up being NCIS: LA actor and host of this year’s Grammy awards, LL Cool J along with Ricki Lake who will be bringing her new daytime talk show to the network.

I had initially learned about LL Cool J coming to Toronto through his Twitter where he said that “immigration treated us like criminals.” When I asked him about it during the morning press session, LL Cool J said that it wasn’t as serious as he made it sound. “They just wanted to get better acquainted with LL Cool J,” he said to which I suggested that they might have just been fans.

The actor and musician was a good choice by Shaw to bring out as he represents the network’s core programming philosophy which is to stick with as many returning hits as possible while also simulcasting as many shows possible with the originating U.S. broadcaster. In that vein, the big relief at the network was obviously that they could now copy FOX’s scheduling by also moving Glee to Thursdays, allowing for the NCIS: LA simulcast on Tuesdays. They now have the flexibility of being able to pair up NCIS and its spin-off on the same night.

The other reason that I liked the Global presentation as much as I did is because of how well Shaw’s Senior Vice President of Content, Barb Williams addressed tough questions from the crowd of tired journalists. When asked about the lack of Canadian programming on the primetime schedule, and moving the highly successful sci-fi drama Continuum over from specialty channel Showcase to the main network (especially after it premiered to a whopping 900,000 on Sunday), Williams effectively said that they have time to discuss their Canadian content down the line and in the mid-season. I appreciated the honesty as the upfronts are mainly about the hot new U.S. television imports, designed to attract the big advertiser bucks.

Let’s get to the new Global schedule.

Shaw Media’s 2012-13 Programming Grid

On Mondays, the lineup looks pretty much the same. Bones kicks things off at 8 p.m., followed by a pre-release of Parenthood to replace the vacant House hole. Hawaii Five-0 rounds things off at 10 p.m.

Vegas

On Tuesdays, the after the aforementioned powerhouse combo of NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles, the first new show will premiere at 10 p.m. Vegas stars Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow) and Michael Chiklis (The Shield, No Ordinary Family), and is inspired by the true story of former Las Vegas sheriff Ralph Lamb. A former military police officer during WWII, Lamb (Quaid) (now a rancher) is tasked with bringing order to Vegas in the 60’s after the Mayor asks him for his help. The result is a feud between Lamb and Vincent Savino (Chiklis), a ruthless gangster intent on making Vegas his own. I think that the casting for this show is spot-on as Chiklis was born to play a mobster. The thing about this show is that it reminds me a lot of last year’s The Playboy Club which I loved but didn’t even make it to the five-episode mark.

Go On

Wednesdays see the most new content in Global’s lineup. After the standard Survivor at 8 p.m., Global will debut a pair of comedies. The first is from Matthew Perry (Friends) who has had a reject run lately with Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip and Mr. Sunshine. Will the third time be a charm for Chandler Bing? We’ll see. In Go On, he plays Ryan King, a widowed sportscaster whose boss forces him to enter group therapy before being allowed to back to work. The result is a reluctant patient and this will apparently result in a lot of laughs. Think of it as a poor man’s Anger Management with Perry playing Charlie Sheen. This will be a post-release.

Guys With Kids

At 8:30 p.m., Global will feature another new comedy which will also be post-released. Jimmy Fallon is the executive producer of Guys With Kids, a comedy about three thirty-something dads who are trying to hold on to their youth while also holding onto their new babies’ hands. The show co-stars Jesse Bradford (The West Wing), Zach Cregger (Friends With Benefits) and Anthony Anderson (Law & Order). I literally don’t see any difference between this show and last season’s Man Up failure. I predict the same for this.

Chicago Fire

At 10 p.m., the network debuts one of its big pick-ups as Chicago Fire makes its debut. The drama stars Jesse Spencer (House) and Taylor Kinney (The Vampire Diaries), and is about the heroes of the Chicago Firehouse 51. Looks okay, but will have to watch more episodes before making a final decision.

Thursdays also look very different for the network. In one of the most shocking announcements of the day, The Office was noticeably absent and considering it has always been a staple for Global’s Thursday night schedule, this has to offer the definitive proof that the show’s heyday is long behind it (especially with the departures of James Spader and Mindy Kaling). Senior Vice-President of Content, Barb Williams said that the show hasn’t been shelved and holding it gives them options for the mid-season, but you have to wonder.

Last Resort

Instead, Thursdays start off with Last Resort at 8 p.m. It is the thrilling story of the U.S. Ballistic Missile Submarine Colorado who is told to fire nuclear weapons at Pakistan. When Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) asks that the order be confirmed, he is relieved of his duties and Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) is put in charge. Faced with the same dilemma, when he refuses to fire as well, the Colorado is fired upon and hit, leaving the crew in shambles as they are now rogue enemies of their own country. The crew sets up base on an exotic island where they find refuge, romance, and a chance at a new life while still trying to clear their names and return home. The concept combines elements of shows that have already worked, and I think that the cast can pull it off. While he will always be Ben from Felicity to me, I think that this role fits Speedman like a glove.

Elementary

As mentioned earlier, Glee moves here from Tuesdays at 9 p.m. and then it is time for Elementary, another major score for the network. The CBS import is a modern-day series about Detective Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Dr. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu) as a crime-solving duo who crack tough cases in New York. This was definitely one of the big-buzz shows of the new season. There is no doubt that Global benefitted from the fact that the CTV and Citytv schedules are already jam-packed with returning hits and this allowed them to have more flexibility in terms of slotting new stuff in.

Made In Jersey

I was relieved to see Touch return to both FOX and Global as it ended up being the best new show of 2011. While it has been relegated to Fridays, on the new sked, I think that this will hopefully help it get a third season. We saw what the Friday slot can do for Grimm, and a Shark Tank / Touch combo sounds pretty good. At 10 p.m., the network will air a new drama called Made In Jersey where Janet Montgomery (Black Swan) plays Martina Garrett, a working class woman who uses her street smarts to compete among her Manhattan colleagues at a prestigious law firm in New York. What Martina lacks in an Ivy League education, she makes up for in tenacity and blue collar insight.

Sundays look the same with The Cleveland Show, The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, Family Guy, American Dad and the only non-animated series, The Good Wife, all returning. Super disappointed that Napoleon Dynamite didn’t get a sophomore season as I thought it was better than all of these combined.

So there you have it. The new Global schedule. While it is impressive, the real announcement that the network shocked advertisers and the media with at their upfront presentation, was that after 13 seasons of simulcasting Big Brother, the network is finally ready to launch a Canadian version of the show.

Big Brother Canada is a co-production between the Mark Burnett Productions of Canada, Insight Productions and Endemol. The first season will air in 2013 on Global specialty channel, Slice and will feature a diverse group of Canadian contestants living in a house outfitted with cameras that record their every move. Week to week, the houseguests compete in a series of challenges and vote each other out until one claims victory and takes home the grand prize. The show will be on three times a week (just like its American counterpart) and there will be a myriad of live streaming and social engagement opportunities for fans to have an opportunity to determine what happens in the house.

There was an audible gasp in the audience when the announcement was made. Barb Williams made no mention of it during the morning press conference and given how hard it is to keep a secret in the day and age of social networking, it was certainly the most shocking announcement of the 2012 upfront season. As the world’s foremost reality television expert, I can also say definitively say that it is the biggest reality announcement in Canadian television history. Oh, and Julie Chen… move over. I am throwing my hat into the hosting ring for the show.

Noticeably absent in Global’s announcement that they would be launching A+E channels Lifetime and H2 to Canada, and that History Television with be rebranded to just HISTORY, was any discussion on the future of Global Reality Channel. GRC was the home for reruns of my show and while it can be assumed that its missing logo on all of Shaw’s upfront paraphernalia and press kits means that it will be one of the channels that will be rebranded, Global execs weren’t as quick to condemn it when asked about its future. With that being said, I certainly hope it can be saved as it would be the perfect channel to air bonus Big Brother Canada material. Big Brother Canada After Dark anyone?

All in all, I enjoyed the Global upfront. While they certainly didn’t bring in the talent that Rogers did, their morning press conference at the Trump International featured the best venue for an upfront that I have ever been to. While they only brought in LL Cool J and Ricki Lake, they used them quite effectively. There was a lot of time with each at the press conferences and it was moderated well by ET Canada host, Cheryl Hickey. When they appeared at the presentation itself to schmooze with the audience, LL came down the aisle and high-fived with the execs almost as if he was a wrestler. This made for a lively and electric atmosphere. Ricki Lake was also an effective co-host for the presentation and did a better job than Matthew Morrison did last year. Global also benefitted from having the best speaker of the three networks in Barb Williams who spoke eloquently about Shaw’s mandate for the new season.

My only suggestion for improvement would be to have more one-on-one time scheduled with the talent. With each passing year, we are slowly seeing the rise of online outlets and the demise of newspaper.  Eventually all the networks will realize this, and I can’t wait for that day.

“Camp” captures a kid on a burglary charge. Instead of just dumping the kid off at juvenile hall, Malloy offers to take the kid to a camp in the mountains. He’s under the belief that a wilderness week will tame the wild child. The kid isn’t ready for the woods. June Lockhart (Lost In Space and Lassie) plays the trouble teen’s mom. Ronnie Schell (Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.) pops up. “Team Work” introduces a new way of combating crime. Like Emergency, the show was a way to reach distant law enforcement departments with techniques that could be investigated. Adam-12 was like Cops with stories taken from real police officers. “Roll Call” makes Reed fake being a pizza delivery boy in order to scam a con artist. “Suspect Number 1″ explains how a recently released 60 year old convict wants to get busted again since he wants to retire in the penal system. “Point of View” foreshadows the final episode when a fellow officer goes to Malloy for advice on how to deal with his wife.

“Earthquake aka Lady Beware” brings Sgt. Gloria Tyler (Beth Brickell) along on the ride. They must track down a rapist targeting teen girls. “X-Force” gets ugly when Malloy loses it while looking for missing girl. Could this lead to the end of his career? Keep your eyes peeled for Paul Gleason (Breakfast Club). “Alcohol” puts out an APB for a bald serial rapist. Is this a dig at Kojak from creator Jack Webb (Dragnet)? Later on the shift, they must remove a large woman from a phone booth.

“Credit Risk” pits Reed against his credit card company. Someone messed with his rating. Amazing how a fresh topic in 1974 remains an issue in 2012. Willie Aames is a troubled teen. “Christmas” introduces the heartwarming concept of Suicide by Cop. “Victim of the Crime” covers the most horrible crime that can investigated by TV cops. An old woman has her TV stolen. They need to get this woman her TV back or they’ll lose a viewer.

“Lady’s Night” gives the boys a night off. Malloy and his girlfriend (Aneta Corsault) take Reed and his wife (Kirstin Nelson) out to dinner. But work interrupts the evening in the form of a heist. “Gus Corbin” brings back the rookie concept in the form of Mark Harmon (NCIS). He’s trouble to Reed and Malloy. “Something Worth Dying For” appears to be the end of Reed and Malloy. Reed wants more than just the usual patrol duty. He spends time in the narcotics squad. When his raid on a drug dealer goes bad, Reed has to save a downed Malloy in a shooting gallery. Reed’s wife can’t take it. She can’t take the pressure of being married to a cop anymore. Will she test Reed’s love by making him quit? Can he leave Malloy? It does rate as one of the best ending episodes for a cop series.

Adam-12: The Final Season brings to an end a cop series that did its best to show what it truly meant to be a partner. Reed and Malloy proved that not every buddy cop show or movie had to involve the straight man and the wacky freak. While they series came to an end, their black and white patrol car must still be circling Los Angeles keeping the streets safe of Willie Ames.

Adam-12: The Final Season shows that Reed and Malloy didn’t drive off indifferently into the sunset. They were passionate about their policework. The final episode does a fine job of summing up the series instead of schmaltzing it up. The was a show about the two guys in the patrol car.
